The New Fram Ultra......

Product info updates on websites is on the back burner after customer support winding up to speed. :D I'm sure it's a permanent change ... maybe the first step in more changes to come.
Just placed my order for 12 Royal Purple oil filters via Royal Purpler Direct. While I consider this to be an utterly stupid move, I wish FRAM the best of luck. I would have paid more for a FRAM Ultra/Titanium filter if they made the metal casing slightly thicker and kept the excellent spun micro-glass wire-backed media.

I am not bashing FRAM, but they might as well embrace the following tagline: "We can always make a cheap filter ... cheaper!" 😿

Went to Wally world and found two old Ultra filters in new boxes. Two other filters didn't have the metal mesh. I checked several other Ultras in various applications and they were of the old design in new boxes!

Now you don't have to cut one of those RP filters open and post pics on BITOG but I know that several people would appreciate it if you did 😁

I can't believe Fram is running metal end caps on the Ultra filter. They really need to invent some card board ends caps that go 20k miles
TG is rated to 15K, so making non-metal end caps that can go 20K shouldn't be too hard. Just make them 50% thicker. 🤫 :D

In the past the only reason they were using metal end caps was that you really can't glue steel mesh and glass to cellulose very well, if they keep this new design in the long run I wonder if they'll start gluing the cellulose backing to a cardboard end cap and ditch the metal. I'm surprised that when they started making ultra cartridge filters they didn't switch to using a plastic media cartridge inside the ultra spin-on filters, I'd think molding a plastic end cap around synthetic wire backed media would be better than a wad of glue into a metal cap, but maybe the plastic is actually more expensive than the metal/glue design.

Fram silver & black Tough Guard series 15K oil filter now the best over all value in Fram oil filters ?

FRAM had a hard time ditching the "Orange Can of Death" mantra, and it took years to re-invigorate their image, thanks largely to their excellent FRAM Ultra line of filters. If anything, they should have improved it and increased the price slightly. I don't think that a lot of thought was put into the decission of cutting the quality of the FRAM Ultra spin-on filters. I hope that someone from FRAM can tell us with a straight face and without any shennanigans that this is an improvement, rather than a change meant to bolster their bottom line.

I agree. Or they could have left well enough alone and raised the price a bit. I guess at the end of the day the amount of money lost from enthusiasts they pissed off or might have lost will be made back in spades by the money saved by cheapening the product and living off their reputation. That may or may not come back to bite them in the ass, time will tell.

I think I might switch to a Fram Tough Guard for 2 OCI of 4,000 miles. Would ya'll feel comfortable having the Tough Guard do 8,000 miles?

If the engine is in good shape (no sludge) it would do that no problem since it's rated up to 15K miles.
