The New Fram Ultra......

After watching the video posted here, I have mixed opinions. The filter MIGHT not be as bad as we think, operative word is MIGHT.

I'd like to see them after they've been in service for 10k miles or more before I come to any final conclusions.

Perhaps?

As I said earlier, nobody is saying they are bad, they've just been cheapened. Swapping out full synthetic glass media for a cellulose media with a light synthetic topper to increase holding capacity. It's like the PureOne with a sprinkle of depth media on top of it.

I'm not sure what the service record is going to tell us? They will be effective filters, they just won't be as good, flow-wise, as the full synthetic media version, which was probably wildly overkill in terms of flow relative to the OEM spec that they claim the new version still meets the requirements of. Again, a high pleat count cellulose media with lots of surface area and high filtration efficiency can still flow very well. It's that a synthetic depth media with the same specs will flow better.

Some are writing them off totally, based on this thread. I agree they won't be as good flow-wise, will it matter? The service record will tell us if the media is going to tear as some are a$$uming. They might be right. My point is we aren't going to know until we see them after they've been used. They might very well be total garbage. As I said earlier I'm well stocked and prefer to take a wait and see approach, there will be plenty of beta testers reporting before I run out of the old design filters. ;)

I'm doubtful we'll see tearing, that's typically something we haven't seen with FRAM, but maybe I'll be unpleasantly surprised? LOL

@Snagglefoot

New XG on top, old XG on bottom:

This is from one of the videos shared in this thread. The filters have been cut open and their media stretched and a square portion cut out for comparison. You can clearly see the metal screen lining on the old filter's media whereas the new one is missing it.

I’m thinking the comments on the metal screening is a bunch of BS. 21 pages and no one has been able to produce a photo on what this “metal screening” looked like on the original Ultra.

The original video said “ I can safely say this has no metal backing” What? It looks no different from any C & P of any earlier Ultra except for the the different filter material. The comment about the metal backing is missing from the box so everyone is assuming something is different with no photo evidence.
Problem has been solved. Yep, a few bittoggers submitted the evidence. There was a metal backing to the filter material that is now gone.

Are you actually reading everything and watching the videos posted? It's been shown what the screen looks like and also show the new Ultra has no screen anymore.

Looks like I'm wrong, Fleetguard DOES make a filter that crosses to the PH2 (if you search for the XG2 they say they don't have a cross, lol):
https://catalog.cumminsfiltration.c...artflag1=5&forPartNumber=LF3681&criteria=part

The LF16002

Vague filtration data, 100% at 30 microns, lol.

They don't make a synthetic media cross for the smaller 5.7L truck filter.

Donaldson makes a traditional (cellulose) filter, but no Synteq version.

Perhaps @NashNative can provide us some better filtration data for the LF16002?
You cut one open in 2009, looks nice.

The video where he tears the new media made it look like it tore pretty easily. If Fram gets sloppy and makes them with big spaces between the pleats it could be a recipe for media tearing. Will have to see how C&Ps look.

Just a bit of rank speculation here...

Do you think there's any possibility that Fram will launch a higher priced filter line above the Ultras now that they have cheapened the Ultras? And that this higher priced line would still have the wire backed thick media that everyone is clamoring for?

EG $4
TG$7
UL$10
New $13-$14?

I mean it can't be lost on Fram's corporate owners that other folks that make wire backed synthetic media oil filters are getting $15 or more for them.

/speculation

I doubt it.

The 'cheapened' Ultra has now left the Titanium in its' own wire screen backed niche, to be sold at a premium price.
