Yeah, the Verizzano bridge tolls are reason enough to avoid the place!!
I remember when the toll was only one way.

I used to go to the Cleveland area in an 18 wheeler from Richmond, VA and I had to pack 200 bucks with me to get through the PA and Ohio Turnpikes. Now I believe the toll is actually a little more than that for a truck from Breezewood, PA to Cleveland.

The Breezewood Gap! A geeky destination for some people

I last drove I 95 south of Providence in 1974. All the way to Ormand Beach. Lately when I was going to VA and the Carolinas, I would head west north of NYC and pick up I 81 in PA. When I was going to Toronto, I would spend $20 for tolls on I 90. I'm happy NY Thruway is constantly improving the road. Same in MA

As a resident here, I can tell you from experience that a 3-county trip is a not a frequent one at all.

The choice between Turnpike or I95 is entirely dependent on destination and time of day.

I95 cuts through the East of the costal area, Turnpike through the middle, and I75/Sawgress through the West. Once you get into Dade County, I75 and the Turnpike cut further West and South.

Save yourself the hassle, and just use a good GPS program that allows you to figure the ETA of both toll and toll free routes. You'd be amazed how many times the toll free route is an hour longer.

Tolls are not so bad if you work smart. Putting 5-6000 miles a month on the road, most of my trucks rarely exceed $65 a month in tolls.

Toll roads cost roughly twice as much per mile as a regular road.

Florida has a "take care of your old stuff before buying new stuff" policy. So they tend to have crowded, yet well-maintained roads.
