Q: About today's Mobil 1 0W-40 line up

Really now. So the cause of the failure was that the Mobil 1 0W-40 had too little "viscosity" but a different brand will save the engine?

Whatever next.
They didn't say that. They advised him on using the Motul with a higher viscosity instead. 150,000 miles on a high performance engine like that isn't a bad lifespan.

When GM switched the factory fill on the Corvette from 5w30 to 0w40 you should have seen the reaction from all of the old dudes who incorrectly thought that they were getting thinner oil now. They almost fell out of their jean shorts and New Balance shoes! 😆
HAHAHAHA exactly. "It's actually thicker." heads blowing off.

Classic. They have it kinda right but then state 0W30 is too thin meanwhile telling folks 5W30 is great. This is a good outfit but as many have seen, oil still seems to be a mystery for many with bad advice given.

Yep:
Why not run 0w30? You could. However you then have little to no thickness in the oil and you could still damage parts of the engine from the oil being so thin.
That’s just so wrong to be laughable.

The suggestions I have about the people who are running that site would get me kicked off this one. They've done their work in terms of capturing an information space, unfortunately they're the type of people who don't absorb information, they just repeat things.

For sure, I was in that FB group for a bit then needed to remove myself, again, some knowledge of the MQB/MK7/8 platflorm but I read things to support what you said - just believing the bro-science at times and they are affiliated for a for-profit shop so there is a motivation to sell for sure, no real difference from the other "tuner" vendors.

Rockerarm failure was not an oil related failure.
Just dang up and died, it up and died ... After 20 days he still grieves

But I bet the guy wasn't using 0W40 FS the whole time.

Yeah, most/all of the MQB groups are ran by for-profit vendors.

Had to go watch the video to see what the head looked like. Lost a needle bearing and the cam looked pretty worn. I agree, either was using shoddy oil previously or not changing it often enough. Dumb to blame 0w40.

Yes. The cause of the failure was a broken rocker arm. They recommended a higher viscosity of Motul. Another factor in that decision, is that in this part of the country 0W oils are not necessary. It doesn't get cold enough.
But who cares about Motul? They don’t have a monopoly on the viscosity market. Besides, HT/HS would be a better metric anyway. Why not just say a 50-grade and be done with it? Motul doesn’t have anything to do with it.

And who cares whether your area needs an oil with a 0W winter rating. That’s irrelevant here and isn’t a factor in the decision making.

Their website lists the cST@100 at 13.8 for the current FS Euro API-SP. I assume this is the current one?
I was scratching my head about that too. Also the Mg/B balance seems kinds skewed toward the Mg end of the package. ANs seem to have taken care of the low virgin oxidation vs. PAO. Dunno, I'm not a smart man Jenny.

Look, I'm just telling you what they recommended for him to use. Why are you being so argumentative? "My area" is his area. He lives less than a mile from me.

I've talked to guys in shops like that who say things like "Mobil got rid of zinc entirely" and "Just run VR1 or Redline, only way to keep your bearings alive these days." $20 says whoever said to switch to Motul could not explain what HTHS is.

They, (Dave's Auto Center who made the recommendation), work very closely with Lake Speed Jr. in regards to their oil selections. So take up your arguments with him, if you feel he lacks knowledge.

Doing a youtube collab is a bit different than them phoning up a tribologist whenever they do an oil change. I think "works very closely" is probably an enormous stretch.
