I pondered moving to Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 on my last oil change. I've been very pleased with 0w-40 so that is what stayed with it.
Does "it" refer to the BMW approval? You're saying if you're not doing long duration OCIs then the BMW approval doesn't matter as much? And it primarily is to allow long drain capability. If you’re not running (very) long OCI that doesn’t really matter.
If I still had my BMW that is the oil I’d use. VW 504 00 is good e enough for me.
Not compared to VW 504 00 approval which is also a long-drain approval. If BMW “Longlife” approval is super concerned about oxidation then that’s related to the OCI.Does "it" refer to the BMW approval? Do you think BMW approvals in general are superfluous then compared to VW 504? Any additional utility to them? Not compared to VW 504 00 approval which is also a long-drain approval. If BMW “Longlife” approval is super concerned about oxidation then that’s related to the OCI.
I think “race to the bottom” is more the likelihood so finding what hasn’t cheapened has gone up in value. Also why I don’t mind paying for boutique. I trust Amsoil’s Signature line for my needs and wouldn’t hesitate to use their Euro lineup either. HPL on par in my view. Not questioning which line may no longer be premium or be cheaper for cheap’s sake at the customer’s expense.I remember times when ESP 5W30 was absolute gold of an oil. The version prior to the last one, up until maybe 2018.
It had Noack 5.6% and Sulfated Ash at 0.6%.
But, race to the bottom….
Where is this found, Buster? So Mobil 1 ESP does 30% better on API Seq IVB. Not bad. Also, notice they look for oxidation and max Fe of 400ppm.

I only worry about brand new engines where we don’t know if there’s any coating compatibility issues or if these oils pass things like the Valvetronic test. I’m sure it’s fine and agree with you, but I’d love to not have to use it “off-label” under warranty. I can’t in good conscience recommend it for people in warranty when we have good oils that are also carrying BMW approvals. And it primarily is to allow long drain capability. since you are a mechanic and had a lot of bimmers ,I only worry about brand new engines where we don’t know if there’s any coating compatibility issues or if these oils pass things like the Valvetronic test. You won’t have problems.since you are a mechanic and had a lot of bimmers ,
is my '11 BMW 120i E82 N43B20 168 hp among the coating compatible ones and safe to use it ? since there is no bmw approval?
both esp 0-30 and esp X4 0-40?
I’m not a mechanic but it’s probably fine. Only brand new engines are relying so heavily on DLC and other less well-known coatings. People have been running non BMW oils like Red Line etc in all the N engines for over a decade.since you are a mechanic and had a lot of bimmers ,
