Shelf space in my local Walmart is way down.

Same here. Big reduction after store remodel.
I assume DIY oil sales are down and they're responding to trends.
Longer change intervals, hybrids, electric cars, etc.

These guys analyze everything. They know exactly how much space it takes up and how long the jug sits there before they get the markup on that $25 jug of oil. If the turnover rate is not quick enough it’s gone. On the other hand, they know it brings men into the store, so they keep a certain amount around. When I go window shop the oil I have to go past the Twinkies.

lol. They have ours facing all the tools. But you have to go by all the home goods and the cosmetics for the wife before you get there.

I buy the Edge Euro 5W-30 at Wal-Mart for $23 or $24.xx / 5qt when on sale. Regular price is $27.xx which is not bad either for all the approvals it has including LL-01.
Seems to have more approvals than the old 0W-30.

Penzoil Ultra Platinum.....not to be confused with Penzoil Platinum.

Poor Marketing / Poor Positioning by SOPUS are to blame . As a matter of fact , I never thought PUP was slotted properly and was “just kind of there” in the Pennzoil line up . I won’t use it because I like a bit thicker 5W30 for my Hyundai 2.4L , so I’d rather run M1 or Valavoline Advanced oils.

And to unpack this question a bit further, when comparing PUP to Mobil 1, exactly which Mobil product are you thinking of? They have a broad range of offerings under that brand name.

IIRC, the 10w30 PUP was the low noack darling for a while. 10w30 PUP is now $38/qt on Amazon.

always in stock at Canadian tire and at very good prices since 2014 in my area. it was my go to oil, but i have started to use Castrol EP 5w30 in my vehicle. they are both good products.

It’s my understanding VRP is GTL? That would make VRP a no brainer for me.
Would love for someone to confirm that, I forget where I read or heard that.
But I am hooked on VRP now even if it’s not GTL.
PUP is difficult to find as said before.

Sometimes Amazon has sales bringing the price down to below $25.00 per 5 qt jug in 3 at a time sales. But I prefer Walmart, much less chance of counterfeit for anything automotive.

Just make sure you check your filter boxes. People keep swapping out the bottom shelf filters for the top shelf filters at Walmart. Last time I was there to buy a fram ultra, all I found was the orange can frams stuffed into the ultra boxes.

I’ve seen that so many times. I stopped getting my filters at Walmart because of it. At least make sure to check first.

I use Pennzoil in my 5.7 Tundra, does great. I tried a few different big brands but for whatever unscientific reason Pennzoil is noticeably more quite.

That's completely unacceptable here. You're ears and brain are not scientific instruments, just ask around. You could look at a car burning and some would tell you it's not until a fire marshal wrote a report verifying it.

I agree 100% and it doesn't take a trained mechanic even to tell when there's a rough vs a smooth idle. There are some that refuse to accept it's possible to tell when your own machine is running smoothly. kschachn and chris719 can maybe chime in and tell everyone how they're wrong about that.

To clear things up, I’m not saying that people can’t tell the difference between a smooth running engine and a rough running (misfiring) engine. I am saying that when people switch from one brand of oil to the next and claim that the engine is smoother and quieter, that it’s all in their heads, or they are comparing the hot oil with the thicker fresh cold oil. Switching between oils of the same viscosity won’t change anything. Going from a 2.7 HTHS oil to a 3.5, maybe, but not from one oil to another that has the same HTHS, and certainly not from mixing up two different brands
