While the human life expectancy has stretched a bit due to keeping us around as our plank narrows ..controlling the failures ..the plank keeps narrowing. It's mainly in the genes.
I was implying that while nobody knows if he'll wake up the next morning, or if he will get killed out of the blue due to factors beyond his control, one can improve his chances of living a long and healthy life by treating one's fragile body and mind with respect and care until the hammer comes down. Of course, there are no guaranties. According to Ben Linus, "Fate is a fickle bîtch."
PS: I don't remember if Lazarus Long is a risk-taking, hard-drinking, lard-eating lothario.
Oh ..no argument here ..but I think fighting one's nature also costs you in terms of "quality of life". It's like the illiterate at my old job. He was functionally illiterate ..but had over $650k in the bank after 30 years of work. Everyone admired him ...but when offered the sacrifices that he made to achieve the coveted "pot o gold" admitted that the loss of enjoying the fruits of their labors would be too much of a price to pay.
My BIL's wife, Kate, was Wonder Woman ..hmm..I guess more like an upgraded version of Brigitte Nielsen - physique-wise. She ate like a horse. She stuffed veggies like they were preloaded in a high speed ammo loader. She acknowledged that she really loved meat ..but couldn't pig out with such zeal if she had it in her diet. To her, it was worth it to win the battle of the bulge.
It's all about choices and what's important to you.
..but as I've said when asked "who wants to live to 106?" ..I respond, "Ask someone 105.". I personally find how I've managed myself in terms of my relationships as being the most important element in my life. The rest is just a matter of time.
