Forgot to mention the American citizens of Japanese descent that were rounded up and put in concentration camps...by the same elected prez. that wanted to take down the Supreme Court.

I don't know where you studied history. In 1932, Hindenburg was elected once more as president of the Reich. Feeble old man he was, and under pressure from especially a manipulative Franz von Papen, Hindenburg appointed Hitler as chancellor in early 1933. Hitler was not voted into office, but he was allowed to seize power.

I stand corrected.

The National Socialists did have a serious presence, but not majority, in the Congress at the time.

I do ..and you do too. How are you supposed to live longer than you're supposed to

While the human life expectancy has stretched a bit due to keeping us around as our plank narrows ..controlling the failures ..the plank keeps narrowing. It's mainly in the genes.

Yes, I do admit this.

I went through a battery of tests ...stress, pulmonary, blah-blah, etc. My doctor said that I was looking good on paper. I also lost my hypertension ...which I've never heard of ..and am otherwise a walking risk factor.

I said if this is what being in "good shape" was from a statistical analysis, they can keep it (yes, I'm sorta joking) if this is "good" ...I pity anyone who could possibly be "fair".

I was implying that while nobody knows if he'll wake up the next morning, or if he will get killed out of the blue due to factors beyond his control, one can improve his chances of living a long and healthy life by treating one's fragile body and mind with respect and care until the hammer comes down. Of course, there are no guaranties. According to Ben Linus, "Fate is a fickle bîtch."

PS: I don't remember if Lazarus Long is a risk-taking, hard-drinking, lard-eating lothario.

Time of war. Pres did what was necessary. Was it wrong? Maybe as a Monday Quarterback the answer is yes. But who knows. There was very little sabotage in WWII.

Oh BTW-the Supreme Court approved this move.

You certainly need to reach deep to validate your fear of this country. 65 years ago during wartime.

Like I said..there are a number of African Countries without much a government. Give one of them a try and report back to us.

You are probably young so you have not witnessed that over the years people have been enjoying more and more rights. And consequently its more and more difficult to put bad guys in jail.

The government was wrong to put it's own citizens in camps, that's that. The only reason it was possible was that people were afraid and still had quite a bit of racial prejudice, and allowed the government to do it.

The current trend in the world is for governments to grow more controlling, not less. In some countries people are apparently left alone, as long as they don't get in the way too much, thus they seem to feel as if they have plenty of rights.
Our own country has little trouble putting people in prison; they are overflowing. So either there are more people breaking the law, or just more people getting caught. Or possibly, there are too many laws that breaking can land you in the slammer. It does seem that many who "need" to be incarcerated are not, while many are doing time for small things.

Oh ..no argument here ..but I think fighting one's nature also costs you in terms of "quality of life". It's like the illiterate at my old job. He was functionally illiterate ..but had over $650k in the bank after 30 years of work. Everyone admired him ...but when offered the sacrifices that he made to achieve the coveted "pot o gold" admitted that the loss of enjoying the fruits of their labors would be too much of a price to pay.

My BIL's wife, Kate, was Wonder Woman ..hmm..I guess more like an upgraded version of Brigitte Nielsen - physique-wise. She ate like a horse. She stuffed veggies like they were preloaded in a high speed ammo loader. She acknowledged that she really loved meat ..but couldn't pig out with such zeal if she had it in her diet. To her, it was worth it to win the battle of the bulge.

It's all about choices and what's important to you.

..but as I've said when asked "who wants to live to 106?" ..I respond, "Ask someone 105.". I personally find how I've managed myself in terms of my relationships as being the most important element in my life. The rest is just a matter of time.

Why anybody would want artificially made trans fats allowed at all is beyond my level of comprehension.
Butter is probably GOOD for many people, in moderation of course, and assuming it isn't loaded with poisons that the cows ate. Immature science allowed marketers to sell us low-fat bunk for so long, then how bad butter and eggs are (without qualification), etc.

If they have guts to continue this trend (of banning harmful transfat) they should ban corn syrup too, for the nation's health.

Agreed with banning high fructose corn syrup. That stuff is bad news for humans. I don't like the adverse long-term effects that HFCS has on humans, including excessive weight gain and a spike in blood sugar that leads to diabetes. This isn't a high dose, either. IIRC it was about 5-6 sodas a day for a year that caused this. Plenty of kids and adults are drinking this much soda per day for years, and we as a society are paying the price for our cheap "sugar".

Yeah, we're sorta geared to hammering our pancreas to dysfunction. Add a few too many pounds of well marbled fatty muscle ..and you're a future diabetic.

I still can't get over the universal law. All that is either easy and/or cheap is harmful. It's never the good thing. Why can't sugar ..in high doses, be the greatest health enhancer there is? Why can't ZDDP be a catalyst enhancer forming an even more valuable compound in its deposit upon the lattice

Why is tree bark and grass clippings the most viable diet for a long and healthy life....
frown.gif

..but don't admire the more "reduced fat" cultures too much. While most of them don't have the heart disease that we do, most of the rice and noodle types also have diabetes as their Achilles heel. I don't care how perfectly balanced their amino acids are.

From trans fat to concentration camps...

If we bring back lead paint, it'll be a victory for libertarianism and the constitution.

BRING BACK TRANS FAT...BRING BACK TRANS FAT...

That would be a high dose!

That's your personal view, but not necessarily everybody else's. Why the desire to eat and drink sweet stuff in high doses? Something is wrong there.

Well, if high fructose laden soda was a health food, would you reject it for strained beet juice if it offered long term harm to your health? I éclairs were good for you and the more you consumed ..the more buffering you got against genetic damage due to free radicals ...would you opt for a celery stick if it was shown to promote tumor growths in lab rats? If heavily marbled beef cleansed blood of toxins and cleaned your arteries ...would you opt for tofu that was shown in many studies to be a leading cause of coronary disease?

I get the impression that you would not avoid these consumables and opt for less healthy options out of some self loathing in the need to suffer for no good reason ....or so I reason.

Gary, do you assume that I don't choose eating foods that I like? I eat what I want to eat. In fact, I eat pretty much anything. From whipped cream (the real stuff) to tater tots to a slab of meat, I eat it all. I have a soda on occasion, but I'm not guzzling it down by the 2 liter bottle. I do not gorge myself on a few particular items that the local populace chooses as staple foods: chemically altered fat and refined or altered carbohydrates. It's a matter of common sense and a sense of taste. Explain to me why American sweets stuff like soda and baked goods are at least 50%, and often much more sweet than are comparable products elsewhere? I can't gag down regular American cake -- and I don't wouldn't want to, even if I could get past the gooey glop. I'm not making sacrifices when choosing my food. I eat what I like, and it happens to be a balanced diet. It's a matter of being raised eating decent food. It's not my fault if you prefer washing down Twinkies with root beer!

But suppose a balanced diet was proven to be exactly what you can't take too much of and that the variety of foods you currently eat are robbing you of vitality and longevity? It's not the case, naturally, but "what if"? I get the impression that you pride yourself on a "mastery" of many things ..diet being one of them. If intensely sweet cake was essential to your well being ...by GUM ..I think that you would manage to get your daily adult requirement PLUS ..just to exceed the need in that dept.

Which brings me to my universal law. Everything cheap and appealing (to many/most) is "bad". It doesn't matter whether it's ZDDP or fructose.

I do agree that some of the cheaper offerings are merely repackaged sugar suspended in some inconsequential textured carrier.

I see not point in amusing this silly and irrelevant hypothesis of yours.

The Amish seem to do okay. But it's by choice.
