I recenty purchased some 5w-30 Yardman/MTD (Olympic Oil Co.) APi SJ winter oil, and before i put some into a sample bottle to do a qualitative "freezer oil flow" test, I did the bottle "sniff" and the oil had no scent other than the mildest, slightest petrol odour. Also the colour was almost clear. I haver never bought an oil that had this light a scent or colour. Did they forget something?

Well, I'll raise my hand. I smell my oil too.

OMG some of you guy having real problem . lol. I think most BITOG is over care about thing. In real life most peoples take their car to the shop for oil change or anything, they dint even know what fuel filter is. and their car last over 300k+ miles.

Don't you smell your milk before you drink it? You ought to do your motor the same courtesy, as a bare minimum. Same goes for glue.

(kidding!)

At one point - yes. But now, I plan to run the 0w-40 syn mystik-citgo in the summer. Dont know what to run for winter/spring oci... maybe mobil 1HM

I don't think he has a problem, I smell my oil too.
Remember my thread about how Mobil Clean 5000 smells like
wheel bearing grease. I kinda like the smell. Maybe I'm weird, but I smell every bottle I open, ever since a friend of mine told me that he got some gear oil in an engine oil bottle once.
(You can't mistake that smell).

Why are you even changing your oil so much given you've stated this:

"Glad you didnt change the oil - many folks do this and they end up with MORE wear due to the highly active detergent pack in a fresh sump. Engines will show the lowest wear metals when sump is 2/3 spent"

Unless you drive a ton, I gather you've changed the oil between various brands more in the last 6 months then I have in several years (I change my oil once a year now since I'm not driving too much).

No, I drink it by look at the date on the jug.

I did note oil smell when I pour it to the engine. But not put on my nose and sniff it. And I did look inside oil filter make sure it have anti-drain back vavle, but not blow thru it. Imagine you blow an oil filter in front of crow peoples. ( the peoples will think " man that fker got problem "

Indeed. Some members report emotional trauma due to the loss of their sense of smell.

Olfactory sensory loss is a crippling affliction for the lubrication aware.

I've found dino oils with no moly or boron smell the best. Specifically Valvoline and Castrol, with Valvoline smelling the best. I swear i can even tell when i'm using valvoline from smelling my exhaust.

However the best smelling exhaust (and i'm not kidding) is diesel bus engine exhaust.
