Ok, I got a 08 Nissan Navara with a 2.5L turbo diesel 4x4 auto for my lads first car. Got it off my dad, who is pretty frugal, now in his 80's.
Anyway it was due for an oil change @ 2019 and about 30,000 km ago! mostly long country runs (good onya dad! he said it could do with an oil change, FFS!). I have to say after dropping the oil, I have never seen as much soot in any oil change, I've ever done before! The oil funnel I used to pour the waste oil into a drum with was like I had emptied a black carbon printer cartridge into it!, thinned with diesel! The oil was about 1.5L over full, which I suspect was fuel dilution. I put in some mineral 15w40 SN/CF and have to buy a special tool to remove the oil filter.. which I suspect is plugged and is in permanent bypass!
It is being removed tomorrow and I will cut it open and share the findings.
The new oil went instantly black.
So my plan is this:
1) Change oil filter and run for about 500km
2) Change oil and filter @ 500km
3) Repeat twice, maybe out to 1000km and watch for improvements in oil colour?
After this I have some Castrol 15w 40 Ultraclean SN/CF ACEA A3/B3 which I can Put in, or do I continue with the Nulon 15w40 API SH, API SL, API SJ, API SG API CF?
I'm sort of feeling like the Castrol might be wasted if used too soon.
How long do you think this motor will take to clean out ?
Thoughts welcomed.

Yours may need a dose or two of "laxitive" to clean things up. Too many times, frugality doesn't pay off.

Well knock me over with a feather.... other than the filter material being a bit brittle, it was not what I expected. I think dear ol dad's memory isn't what it was. I think he did have it serviced and had forgotten! Long distance trips for the most part. The new oil still looks soot loaded, although clearly much slicker to the feel.
Stout filter by the looks..

On most diesel engines the oil is black in a very short time. I know my 2012 Ram Cummins does this regardless of OCI. It’s how diesel’s work. The fact that the funnel was coated is good IMO. That means the oil was “sticking” to the funnel. You want your oil to coat things, especially items like bearings and cams etc… Color on a diesel doesn’t mean much IMO.

FWIW I change the oil and filter and go whatever OCI you intend to run.

Just my $0.02

Your plan sounds good! A couple of short runs, with a new filter each time, and your good to go. How many miles on the truck?

I hope you son is doing these oil changes with you, so he knows what to do when he takes over looking after the car.
