New Mazda 3...advice please!

When I talked to the parts manager at my local Mazda dealer about cartridge housing 'issues', he just said he had no idea why anyone even removes the drain plug from the housing. He highly recommended leaving it in place and removing the entire housing just like you would a normal oil filter. It's no different...oil runs down one just like it would the other. If you're changing your own oil, save yourself this step. You're gonna get oil on your hands at some point anyway, so leave the drain plug in. One less o-ring to worry about. Worked great for me on my Speed 6.

All this talk about Cartridges! If I had a cartridge I'd invest in the spin-on adapter that the stealer sells. No more worries about stipping that hex nut.

g/f has a 2007 3 S. About 4,500 miles on the factory oil. I have Amsoil 0w-20 that I will put in hopefully this weekend.

Yeah, I've seen the spin-on but I am not going to do it. It takes me about 15 minutes do to an oil change with a cartridge...it's not difficult.

I haven't removed my drain plug yet in >30K miles since I bought the 3.

cripes, all this complaining about a cartridge - glad to see at least one person leaving it.

All my euro cars dating to the early 1980s have cartridge filters, and I think it is the greatest. Much cleaner and easier, with less waste!'

Indeed, why waste all that metal for a spin on filter if your don't have too?

I love cartidges.

Only wish I could convert the other way so old cars could use them as well.

Most ppl do it @ 1K miles. Other don't do it @ all.
Do what ever you want. There isn't a wrong or right esp. for factory fill.

Plus once you put Amsoil in, you can easily go 10K miles before you ask oil questions again.

The spousal equivalent has the 2006 5 door GT 2.3 auto. It is a lease so I am taking it to the dealer for whatever their maintenance schedule is.

If I were doing it myself and picking from commonly available oils I guess I would use Pennzoil Platinum 5w20.

I use regular Pennzoil or Castrol GTX 5w30 in my older Mazda. It didn't like the 5w20 weight as it actually seemed to consume some oil using the 20, but the Mazda 3 seems really easy on oil. No consumption. Don't know if I would use 5w20 on the turbo, but that is an academic question since i could not convince her to get the MazdaSpeed3

On our Mazda 2.3 I changed somewhere around 1,000 miles, IIRC. Don't go more than about 2,000 miles was the recommendation from a genuinely knowledgeable person here as I recall. This is not relative to a change to synthetic, but rather to flush potential build residues from the engine.
