New Amsoil Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil

Don't Amsoil's oils tend to thicken pretty quickly? Won't this oil turn into a 0W30 pretty quickly? Starting off with a 9.0 cst is darn near a 30 weight oil already. No?

The old SL Amsoil had a tendency to thicken. The new SM stuff seems to hold it's viscosity quite well. However, any oil with thicken over a long drain interval. What I find interesting is how almost all 20wt oils are on the high end of the range. Havoline DS however is only 8.0 cSt @ 100C. Most who run the Amsoil will end up with a 5w-30 oil by the end of the interval. IMO.

Actually no. No. Yes.

Some of the old formulations would thicken a bit, but not necessarily "quickly".

I hope this stuff works. I just ordered 14 quarts for my 05 Mustang GT and 04 Crown Vic both with the 4.6. I also ordered some Amsoil gear lube to service the rear ends. I have been running M1 5w-20 for 6 months in both cars. I will be posting a UOA on the Mustang. I think Mobil should just tell its customers what they are buying, but since they don`t, I am going to try Amsoil

As for the potential 'thickening' issue, that is one reason (among others) that I plan to do my yearly drains in the fall...that way if there is thickening it will be during the summer months when it won't have as much impact if any.

Actually no. No. Yes.

Sorry, screwed up that last post. Here's what I meant to say:

Do I change the oil filter while keeping the same oil for 15k to 1 year?
I'm afraid of oil becoming dirty.
Or does this oil require a special super filter which is only changed along with the oil?
Thank you,

Robert

You can use any filter you like. Just change the filter according to your owners manual, or if using a high capacity filter, change it according to the filter directions. The Amsoil EaO filter is warranted for 25,000 normal/15,000 severe miles or 1 year whichever occurs first.

Apparently you can't reuse the Amsoil Ea0 filter even if you are doing 7-10k oil change intervals, they say once you change the oil you have to change the filter?

That's what Amsoil says. But others are happy just leaving the filter on for up to 4 oil changes, especially if their owners manual says to change filter every other oil change.

Cool. Now which Amsoil dealer do you give your business to?

Eenie, meenie, minie, mo,
catch an Amsoil dealer by the toe.
If he screams, let him go,
Eenie, meenie, minie, mo...

I don't mean to crash this thread, but has anyone noticed that this oil is VERY similar to the M1 0w-20 SL?

M1 VI - 165
TBN - 12
Boron 250ppm
Moly 50ppm
Ca - 3,100

This was the old SL version but I bet this Amsoil add pack is very similar to what I posted above. Too bad Mobil dropped the ball and lowered the specs of the SM M1 (I'm assuming).

Amsoil's pour point - -65F

Probably a true ester instead of AN for the mix. I bet you're right about the adds.

They are slightly similar - but not close to identical

I just ordered 2 - 1 gallon jugs and 3 - quarts and the cost was $23.10 for the gallon jugs and $5.90 for the quarts.

I'm sure it would have been less if I would have ordered in full case quanities.

Johnny,

Is that PC pricing?
TIA

Amsoil said the chemistry is more inline with ASL, which is great. This is going to be a hot seller.

The M1 is decent, but the Amsoil is better.

10k is cake for Amsoil. Very few fall in the 25k mile category due to the conditions needed to hit that.
