My youngest daughter just acquired a Wranger w/the 3.6L Pentastar engine. While under warranty, I'll use 0w-20 oil. (Not a fan, but from what I've read this newest motor version was recommended to use this oil not just for the us market but globally.) So...I'll do an oil/filter change @ 1k using Pennzoil Full Synthetic. (Non-Natural gas to oil conversion.) The reason is this oil has the lowest pour point (-51) and higher viscosity numbers @ 40/100 degree C than the "Platinum" Pennzoil 0w-20. Also, the MRV is the lowest of all the Pennzoil 0w-20 oils. Sounds like a very decent oil all things considered. I may exclusively use this oil while under warranty and then later on use my clearance Castrol Extended 0w-20 oils. Anyone have experience w/this oil so should I just go w/the Ultra? Thanks for your thoughts!

I don’t think they are that picky - did my first few changes with 0W20 and later migrated to 5W30 …

It's good oil of course but I'd rather use something with euro approvals for better wear control like castrol edge euro, castrol EP, and M1 esp all in 0w-20 and sold at walmart. But the dealer rarely asks for receipts and will pull the dip stick first to measure the level and check the color then pull a valve cover to inspect. It's the transmission services that really need receipts. Dealers will refuse warranty if there's no proof of maintenance unlike with an engine as they can easily check that but not with a transmission.

I would recommend the Pennzoil Platinum over the Pennzoil Full Synthetic for the Dexos1 approval. It will assure a higher minimum quality for a slight premium.

MRV and pour point (-51 celsius for Pennzoil Full Synthetic) for a 0w-20 is irrelevant in Virginia, which has a lowest recorded temperature of -34 celsius.

The difference in KV40 and KV100 between the two products is negligible in the grand scheme of things and will be subject to batch variation. The info in the data sheets are nominal specifications. If the engine had direct injection I would say get any bit of viscosity you could get, but with port injection, it is not as big of an issue.

I used Full Synthetic 0w20 in my 1996 Ford Crown Victoria in the winter time. 5w20 in the summer. Ford said it was fine as long as it wasn't a 1991 or older.

I never had a major problem out of that car in over 10 years.

The thing is, listen to the people who made the car. They're not going to recommend something that is going to damage the car. They don't want MORE warranty claims coming back at them.

So viscosity, and if they have any other demands (like GM says only use dexos1 gen3 on their newest cars), follow what they say to do.

Deviating from what the engineers say to do is what gets people in trouble.

Incidentally I've been using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic High Mileage in the Buick and it's fine. The only issue that I've noticed is that I need to top off ever so slightly more often when it has these gas to oil motor oils in the engine. It's not severe and if I switch back to QSFS HM the consumption goes down again. So it's gotta be something to do with the Pennzoil. I don't strongly prefer Pennzoil but I've got half a dozen 5 qt jugs of this stuff for a couple bucks each.

I just do oil changes every 3,000 miles still. I know it's excessive but it's not really costing me much. I've never owned a car where I had serious engine problems.

I believe the car comes w/two or three free dealer oil changes. They use Pennzoil 0w-20 in bulk. (I'm thinking it is the least expensive version? Which would be Full Synthetic.) I very much would like to use an oil closer to 5w-30. (I'm using a blend of 2.5 Qt 5w-30 and 1.5 Qt 0w-20 blend in the Rogue Sport which is DI.) But, it would not be consistent w/the dealer's oil change then with my blend. Now, I could forgo the dealer's OC's and just use my oil. I want there to be consistency. I know the first OC @ 1k mi. will be the 0w-20 Pennzoil Full Synthetic. I guess will see after that...

You could end up with serious engine problems if you go against the manufacturer's specification. They don't put that there as a suggestion. They do it so you don't end up ruining turbos, the oil pump, timing chains, all sorts of other things.

Probably get the most dealership love with PP 0W20 …

I was running Pennzoil Platinum High mileage 0w20 in mine since I got it, but couldn't find it for my latest OCI. So I did valvoline Extended Protection high mileage 0w20....and it still runs/drives. LOL. Don't over think it. Enjoy the Jeep and get it off road!

Thank-you. My daughter is so happy with her Wranger. She extensively drive both the 2 and 4 door version of the exact same car. I personally really liked the 2-door better, plus it was about 5k less. She also felt the 2-door was a better choice for her as she really didn't need the larger model. Being the dad, I'm really looking into maintaining her car starting w/the first oil/filter change @ 1k mi. (It is super easy on this car from what I've seen on the internet.) I just hope she has many, many safe miles driving this wonderful little car. (BTW, since it was a 2024 model, the manufacturer has a $4k+ rebate and the dealer knocked a few thousand off as while. Timing could not have been better.)

The Pennzoil Platinum in 5w30 is thin viscosity and enters 20w numbers during the OCI.
I'd go with it (over the 0w20 version) and do those DIY OCIs half-way between the dealer's free oil changes.
That's what I did.

The Pennzoil Black Label Synthetic is SOPUS's entry-level synthetic and doesn't meet Dexos 1 Gen 3 specs, which does exist on the Pennzoil Platinum specs, along with a few other specs the Black Bottle doesn't offer.

Stellantis doesn't care about Dexos. They don't want to pay for the certification. But there's surely a large number of members here at BITOG that do respect Dexos 1 and for only a couple dollars more, Pennzoil Platinum has that Dexos addition, plus a couple others.

A half-sister competitor to Platinum is Valvoline Advanced. I would consider that one over the Platinum. You will likely feel a slight difference using it (I did). Smooth as silk engine - very quiet and no consumption. You can always switch to EP oils after your free oil changes are completed and even jump on-board the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum freight train for a spin or two.

I tow up 9,000 foot mountain passes in my Silverado running 0w/20-at 90 degrees ambient temperatures. My motor hasn't blown up yet. It gets whatever the dealer puts in to it.
The 1,000 mile oil change....a money flush.
