Best 0W-20 Full Synthetic Oil?

There are a couple of ways to handle newbs or anybody else asking stupid questions.

1. Have an introductory page that answers common, repetitive questions. It should be a sticky on the home page. Update it as needed with new stupid questions.

2. Criticize them for asking, as this is a very serious forum for those who have a high level of technical expertise and simply don't need to be bothered with trivial nonsense.

3. Answer their questions as best as you can with a helpful, friendly spirit.

4. Ignore them if it really bothers you, or if they are being intentionally obstinate.

If you need an approval, which you do, then schaeffers. If your out of warranty, hpl, hps or XPR, torco and redline. That’s been my method minus my 2018 being ran on Valvoline for 85k. In all honesty, the valvoline is plenty good for anything I’d ever need it for, and then some. But doing my own oil changes yields a boutique oil change for less money than the local quick lube or dealer would charge for a barrel oil change and a shop jobber filter. Amsoil, which I always forget about since I have no interest in due to having to join some club to get the price down to less than other oils. I know there’s dealers and blah blah blah, but I still haven’t found one that sells their signature for under $65 a gallon.

What did you expect from a bunch of old grumpy guys?
Now that you mention it, I really am getting grumpier as I close in on 60. Maybe all the back fusions, arthritis settling in everywhere is doing it. Can't go 8 hrs without Motrin or Tylenol. Wife is grumpy too,,,,,and she's only 52. That could be menopause aggravating her. Enjoy you're youth, all you youngins out in BITOG land !!

I’m with ya. I turn 53 on Saturday and my wife is 50. I wake up at 4 just because that’s when my internal alarm goes off, she wakes up at 5. I never know what version is going to walk out of the bedroom. But I can’t fault her, I was outside yelling at the rain yesterday. I do still lift weights and work out 4 times a week, it’s just getting harder. Going carnivore the last 4 months has really helped with inflammation of the joints and a knee made of hamburger. But I really can’t complain to much since I take no meds for anything.

Schaeffer's technically only has API and ILSAC for official licenses/approvals. I have zero doubts that it's a better oil than anything with a dexos license, but it's not in GM's list of them https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexos1_3/index.html

5) Just don't give a fig about things I can't control
You sure about that? :sneaky: You seem triggered by a certain category of threads here.

I support these threads. As mentioned elsewhere, this is many users' first experience with the forums. Instead of complaining about them, all the people complaining should write a very thorough and thoughtful explanation for why it's a difficult question to answer and offering some advice on how to get the best advice from the forum's expertise, and then we can bookmark your kind post and link to it when people ask. I suspect none of those belly aching about it will take me up on the offer.

This may be another can of worms but I worry about the 0W-20 weight oil protection but since it’s under factory warranty, I assume I must stay with 0W-20. Is this a correct assumption? Is there a 0W-20 that would have a thicker viscosity within the 20 wt?
OP I'd say you don't necessarily need to run 0W-20. Lots of fears, none of them realized. We haven't seen anyone have warranty issues (to my knowledge) here ever with running a thicker grade. If you're running a quality 5W-30 and changing it on time, then it will be obvious that it's had on time oil changes, and there shouldn't be issues. If you're really nervous, keep a journal of the oil changes, and "accidentally" write down that it was 0W-20. The warranty paperwork says you need a "record" of oil changes. A journal is a record. You can double check that yourself. And you'll also note that the manual has a "recommended" grade, not a required one.

I think for a Tahoe, you can't beat Valvoline Restore and Protect or Mobil 1 ESP. I'd favor the 30 grades but you do what you're comfortable with. The only side effect of going thicker is better wear protection. You won't be able to detect the difference in fuel economy. You'll likely find your engine sounds better. It's commonly reported here. If you're still nervous, read the Wikipedia article on CAFE, and you'll find out the reason 0W-20 is recommended isn't for you, it's for the manufacturer, so they can get credits for fuel economy. They'd rather you personally sacrifice some engine wear than give up those credits. The 20 grade recommendation isn't for your benefit, but for theirs.

This is also a nice thread if you're absolutely deadset on a 0W-20. 17 pages of banter on 20 grade oils.
