Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE Oil Consumption

I ran M1 Advanced Fuel Economy Dexos 0W-20 for the first time in my disposable commuter car (2021 Chevy Equinox 1.5T). I usually run Dexos 0W-20 M1 Extended Performance from Walmart, but I grabbed a box of AFE at Costco instead. My usual oil consumption with all other 0W-20's has been 1/4-1/3 quart during my 5,000 mile oil change interval. However, using M1 AFE, my oil consumption jumped up to 1/2 quart at 4,000 miles, and near 3/4 quart at 5,000 miles. The oil consumption returned to normal after switching back to M1 EP. Has anyone else noticed this?

Also, does anyone run Amsoil 0W-20 in their GM 1.5T? I never spent the extra money for Amsoil, because I turn and burn my commuters. Just curious.

Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE is not my always go to oil but i have used it on and off for years with no consumption issues. used in several corolla's, scion ia and nissan vehicles.

No experience here. But by yours, it appears the EP gives you a better experience. AFE is the lower tier afterall, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

In your use case, Amsoil wouldn’t be worth it.

Since you like M1
iirc, for small Turbo, M1 0W-40 API SP or something with 229.5 (which M1 has) is not a bad idea. Or on the lower hths side, ACEA A7 B7. But why mess with the thinner side.

If one hasGM engine, 0W-40 is the actual best oil for them. Their bearing is not that tough. I only put 0W-20 or thinner oil in Toyota or Honda, period.

My wife's 2018 Equinox (1.5 turbo) is due for an oil change in a couple weeks and I'm tempted to use a 0W-40. It currently has 74xxx miles on it and hasn't used any oil (0W-20) since we've had it (bought new), and it gets changed every 5,000 miles.

My dad had a 2020 1.5t and it always used a similar amount, mostly city miles. Id top up with 5w30 sometimes or whatever oil was leftover. I'd give a 5w30 a try first. I dont think it's the oil.

Try some Valvoline Advanced maybe. Here’s what the bulk VL 0W20 from the quick lube looks like after 6,800 miles in my GM 1.5T. It’s a lease so I get oil changes done either at Kwik Kar or VIOC. Both use bulk VL oil. It doesn’t noticeably burn oil after 57K miles with ~7,500 mile OCIs.

I used a bunch of different oils in my 2018 Forester with the FB25 engine. Mostly 0w-20s. I tried M1 AFE 0w-30 once and it used like a 1/2 quart in the oil change. Really strange.

try Valvoline 0w-20 EP if you like 0w-20 oil, or Pennzoil ultra-Platinum. Myself I use the 5w-30 pup, seems to work well in my 2024 Subaru.

It’s well-documented that some vehicles are more prone to consumption when switching brands as the chemistry/tribology does its thing. The only way to know for certain if it was an AFE thing with your vehicle would have been to run it 3 or more oil changes in a row.

Generally speaking, the only thing that does better with more frequent changes are underwear. Everything else can be habitual without much fuss.
