I see. He says OEM filters don't rust, but he posted a photo of a very rusty (rusted through) FRAM filter, which looked a lot rustier to me than the Microgard Select filter.
You're saying FRAM, Champion, and AC Delco filters are now siblings. So even if an ACD filter was more rust reistant in the past, it seems unlikely to be any better than FRAM now. In which case, the Microgard or a NAPA filter might still be a better choice.
Am I missing something?
I'm thinking he should use a Baldwin filter. They're a midwest company. They're filters are likely designed to withstand salty roads. They have a thick can. I wonder if their choice of metal or paint is more rust resistant?
He could brush on some POR15 to a new filter. Then no rust for sure.
Just did a Microgard select on a CRV. Had a NAPA gold on it, the napa filter gasket is the correct fit for the base, used calipers to check as well. The Microgard is about .08 to .10 smaller ID and OD gasket than the Napa. That puts some of the gasket or o ringish looking gasket to the inside of the of the contact pad. Just hard to believe its that much. Yes correct number, and so far no leak.
The box did say made in China, and the last wix filter I got some time ago said that as well.
Has anyone else checked this?

I love the Microgard Select MSL57055 because the Bypass Boogeyman hates it! 99% at 20 microns and meets the Subaru bypass spec. Bypass enthusiasts of the world unite!!!
Yes it is per the old style caliper measurement. Don't under stand why its as far off as it is. Thread worked great, mislabeled?
I'll have to go check a new one when I can.

The Microgard Select for my Buick is advertised 25 microns @ 99%. Perhaps it varies by size or part #? Not that it matters though. Whether 20 or 25, either is good.
I wasn't that thrilled with it. Metal shavings came off the threads and ended up on my magnetic drain plug. Also never had an oil filter rust like this. Very much hoping my engine is okay.
I'm guessing the undercarriage of your car has seen some salt and water puddles. It could be anything in your daily commute that interacts with metals.
I haven't heard much about these particular filters exhibiting this problem.
