Hi everyone,

I recently changed the oil in my 2010 XFR jaguar (aj133 supercharged 5.0) to the specific 0W20 castrol. Almost immediatly it developed a very strange ticking sound.

Only on a warm engine, AC on, between 1000 and 1500 rpm. An intermittent quite loud tick coming from under the car, not the top of the engine. These cars are known for rattling superchargers and timing chains/tensioners, but we (mechanic and jag specialist) have checked it 3 times with a stethoscope on every single part of the engine and can't pinpoint it.

Googling, I found a thread on rangerover forums (same engine) where 2 other people had this after an oil change. Sadly no solution posted. But as I got more convinced the oil change started it, I googled on and came across the famous coyote BBQ/typewriter tick. It sounds very very similar and in similar conditions.

Maybe the AJ133 is more Ford then Jaguar would like to admit. (Every part of the engine has foMoCo stamps, but its a jaguar engine according to them).

I'm gonna try the liquimoly ceratec this week as many coyotes benefitted. Just wanted to share this strange coincidence (or is it?!).

Let you know how it goes.

Is 0-20 oil spec'd? I'm asking because A 5.0 Supercharged running a 20wt seems light to me.

I am a member of a Jaguar forum. I have read over the forum some members there experienced a ticking noise after an oil change. Wait for a few days to disappear.
3 questions, are you using the same grade as specified? Did you change the brand of the oil you're using? Oil is in correct fill on the mark in dipstick or in dashboard monitor (non-dipstick)?

coyote and that engine are nothing alike. it has fomoco stamps because it was built in the former bridgeend factory

It was filled by a generic garage at the previous owner with ford spec (ecoboost) 5w20 according to the bills 4000 miles ok. I bought JLR spec 0w20 castrol this time. The level is perfect, I measured in and out to the drop and checked the electronic dipstick.

JLR specs 5w20 for this car/engine, but moved to 0w20 couple years ago. I suspect for fuelmilage, its backwards compatible according to JLR.

0W20/5W20 in a supercharged V8 is an equivalent of professional body builder living on vending machine snacks. Meaning - yes, it will do the job for some time, but issues start with long term use.
Physics matter. MOFT matters. Ideally run a 0W40/5W40, if long term reliability is what matters. Or at least a good 5W30 A3/B4. Otherwise it's just a matter of time before heavy oil consumption, loud worn timing chains, scored cylinder walls, or wiped camshafts become an issue. Red flags are already up in the air with the ticking. Act now before it's too late. Switch to a higher oil grade (with stout approvals) and skip the oil additives.

I would be using a "heavy" 30 or a lighter 40 weight.

Interestingly, this guy on youtube has the exact same tick in his AJ133. I reached out through the comments and his tick started after an oil change (and flush) too. However he changed to much thicker oil. I went from 5w20 to 0w20.
