I clean my a/c unit every year, but was on vacation and fell behind. Usually wait till all the fuzzies are done. Here are some photos. It's a Armstrong Air 2 stage high efficiency unit so it runs on low speed a lot and picks up more junk.

I have discharge and inlet screens for my condenser. Discharge screen to catch mape helicopters in spring, remove that and install inlet screen when cottonwood snow starts. Remove that when that is over and will install discharge screen to catch leaves in the fall. These screens do catch almost everything and don't seem to degrade performance.
 
Is the dryer exhaust outlet next to the unit?
The last house I rented some genius decided to put the outlet literally next to the ac fan. It looked worse than this after like...3 months

I believe it's from cottonwood trees.

It's about 15 to 20 feet away.
