HPL 5W30 for new 24 Hyundai palisade

Well I certainly appreciate the comments as this is what I was looking to hear. I’m slowly backing away from the HPL ledge now as everyone seems to agree that a 5K drain interval doesn’t justify the use of HPL. I guess that I may just drop back down to my old standby Schaffer which isnt a whole lot less expensive but has always been good to me. My Hemi 5.7 ran like a swiss clock on the 5w20.

Don’t back away from HPL unless the cost is an issue. I don’t think you’ll find anyone here that would argue that even 5-8k HPL will still provide the best protection.

Best bet? Try it out. Use the oil Dave recommends for one 8k OCI & get a UOA to see how the oil held up. Then use whatever “backup” you’re considering. Pull an in-service UOA at 4-5k to see how the lesser oil is surviving. If it’s out of grade, and the HPL wasn’t, there’s your answer.

HPL likely isn’t more than 2x shelf oil + 2x filters, so then it’s merely a decision of if you want to cut your time under the car by half just to break even. In my book that’s still a win, because time ain’t free. Plus you’d cut your waste material in half as well

I know another HPL discussion but being a big fan of Schaffer I just wanted to explore different options in the 5w30 game. As HPL seems to be getting more and more attention and I’m thinking this may be a viable option towards the longevity of a GDI engine. I know that there are plenty of off the shelf options but HPL has really piqued my interest. I’m well accustomed to the Bitog banter of responses so bring it on and let’s get it over with. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

HPL is a great choice. It's possibly the best oil on the planet. Will keep engine internals very clean.

You may wish to do the math: How many miles you plan to keep the car for, how many oil changes would that be,
and the cost of each oil change, just to see if the numbers make sense.

I also have the Hyundai/Kia 3.8L V6 and used Valvoline 5w30 XL-III for 50k.

I recently switched to HPL Euro 0w30 for its cleaning ability. I’m also concerned about this engine long term as it’s common for the rings to go and oil consumption to become prevalent in the 75k+ range.View attachment 246348

This right here...I plan on keeping my new Subaru for 200k miles. That's a bunch of oil changes when I'm doing 5k OCI, but until I'm shown a better oil HPL PCMO 5W-30 is going in my engine. Fluids are cheap comparatively...$59 for oil each change with the bitog discount code for 15% off. I could save $1200 over the next 8 years or so it will take me to get to 200k by running any standard OTS brand instead, but $150/yr is worth it in my opinion to get cleaner internals, less consumption, etc.

Do you mean buying HPL in a large circular container, or are you talking about just buying a few sets of 6 quarts each?

I would suggest buying the HPL when they have a sale (usually twice a year) and it saves you more than just 15%. It's been known to reach 20-25%.

Amsoil has sales also. Plus they have at least one free shipping month per year..... maybe even two.

Make sure you're not wasting HPL on a fuel dilution engine.

Love it! I cut open a Fram Endurance that had been run for 3 consecutive 5K OCI, pics are in the Oil Filter forum.
