How come my car takes more oil now?

I have always done oil checks pre-trip. Nowadays with larger capacities in the pan, the expansion becomes a factor I never really considered before. My northstar 4.6 has a 7qt capacity but it takes that 8qt to get it to reach the full line on the stick. Too much fooling around for a 1/2 a qt of oil.
