Tool makes no difference. The plugs are designed as a 1 time use plug. The tool simply unscrews the plug from the center.Speculating that the drain plugs can be used more than once? Or that a tool makes it easier and less likely to damage the plug?

I use a magnetic plug and only replace the O-ring every 2nd time.
Elring (OEM) sell them in sachets. No issues so far.
