Audi oil guidance

Did anybody see this statement? If I had a car that was consuming .5-1qt every 600 miles, I don't know what I would do. Sounds like a major design problem but what do I know. I'm just an IT guy.

It's so everyone that sees a slight drop in oil level doesn't come in and want a new car. Some consumption especially running a lower grade oil can be perfectly normal under some conditions.

Yeah but isn't that amount a little over the top? Maybe it is just me.

Ferrari has had that disclaimer in their owners manuals since the late 1970s...I've never experienced oil consumption close to that...but as stated above, I think it is to prevent warranty claims, especially on a transient situation that may be only while the car is still breaking in?

We just bought a 84,000 mile 2018 Audi Q7 with the newer 3.0t that is notorious for oil control rings sticking due to low tension rings. It used 3/4 of a Qt in just 400 miles after we brought it home, so I did a Berryman's B12 piston soak, then a can of BG EPR in the engine along with a can of the B12 that had soaked past the rings in the crankcase, I ran at 1500 RPM for 25 minutes, dropped the oil and put in a fresh batch of Valvoline Restore & Protect 5W-30 that is still in the engine now. Its what brought me to this site actually.

After I did this soak/flush and oil change process, we ran it up to the Cities to my Daughters and it consumed 1/4 of a Qt in just 40 miles! It then completely quit using any more oil at all after that trip to the cities. We have since just rolled 800 miles today and it hasn't used another drop of oil at all. I've heard of guys doing 5000 mile runs with no more oil usage after doing the B12 piston soak when they were gobbling oil at a rate of 1 Qt in 300 or so miles.

So this low tension sticking oil ring piston deposit thing is a real problem. It's the reason I'm going to continue running the Restore & Protect for a while and do a used oil sample on my next run of it. I'm going to change the filter at 1500 miles and run the first change of VR&P for 3000 or so miles, then thinking to do 4-5000 miles on the next run. I knew this vehicle was prone to this and I figured I'd have to do this as a fix, but seeing the many people who have had the success on doing the piston soak and now having the VR&P available to use, I figured I'd be fine with it and we love the Q7! I'm ecstatic to have seen the oil consumption cured.

I don't want to tell you to not use it but for an Audi/VW, I would use something with the correct add pack which VRP doesn't have. After a quick search, it looks like maybe 502.00/505.00. Maybe try HPL Euro 5W-40. It should clean and/or keep clean while also meeting the visc and VW spec. Amsoil also has their AFL, EFM and EFO. I've used both AFL and EFM in my 2.7t S4.

I hear ya, but honestly HPL is not on Audi's "approved list" either and I don't want an expensive boutique oil. Lets face it, we are not running up over 100 MPH sustained here in the states on our highways, and I'm not doing extended oil changes on the Q7. The oil never gets above 225 oil temp at it highest, more often than that is hovering around 190-200. So honestly what's the importance of running a Euro oil on this engine I'm trying to clean up? So far I've gone from using a quart in 400 miles, to not using any oil at all in almost 900 miles. The engine is not locked up yet, and honestly if I sample the oil on the next change and it show well on the metals and sample, what's the harm? Do I wish it was a 0-40 Euro oil, yes, but its not and I have to believe that 5W-30 will be just fine with oil temps that low. in 2019 Audi recommend to go to a 5-30 anyway with nothing being changed in the engines internals anyway. So I believe it will be OK. If the wear metals turn out to be higher than I like then I'll switch over to Mobile 1 0-40 and just use a can of BG EPR now and again before a change, but I have no intentions of doing that unless the wear metals are to high with the VR&P. Honestly the engine runs really well getting 30 MPG pretty easily, has come to life in the power department and is really running smooth compared to before the piston soak and oil flush.

I get it. I used Rotella T6 in my S and it still runs, though I do have one of the turbos that are blown. I used M1 0W-30 once too. I was running the Amsoil before they had the certs. In the case of the B5 and B6 A4s (I had a bought a used B6 A4), Audi had a lot of problems with sludge and that's why they moved to 5k oil changes from 10k and changed the requirement to synthetic from conventional. It may also be when they came out with the certs too.

For me, if/when I get the car fixed and hopefully a full Stage 3+ upgrade with 6sp trans swap, I'm going with whatever meets or exceeds 502.00, 505.00. But just because I do it, doesn't mean you have to. Always comes down to choice and I'm sure you will be fine. Just thought I would throw out my opinion, and that is all it is.

No but I trust them that they know what they are doing.

And again it’s not about grade. A 30-grade can have the same HT/HS as a 40-grade.
