Audi oil guidance

Hello everyone, 3 months ago I purchased a 2018 Audi s5, EA839 3.0T v6 with a tune ofc. Ive tried doing my own research and finding out what oil to use and I am just clueless, I was hoping you guys can point me in the right direction for what to buy🙏, it would also be really ideal if it was available on FCP Euro. So the previous owner was running Motul 8100 X-CESS GEN2 5W-40, and I see a lot of people on forums/fb running this oil on this car. IG to simplify my question do you think I should continue running the thicker oil or should i switch back to the OEM approved 0w20? The reason I ask this question because recently a video has surfaced on this engine blowing up for using a thicker oil, granted its just 1 engine of many being blown even with OEM oil but I would love to hear your thoughts/advice, Thank You.

You are saying that thick oil is what made the engine “blow up?” That’s not likely, and Audi engines do have an honestly earned reputation for catastrophic engine failure related to lubrication…. My suggestion would be to use the specified oil grade stated in the manual. I would also dissuade you from extended oil change intervals. There are plenty of folks who get high mileage and reliable service out of their Audi engines. FCP Euro, as suggested elsewhere, will not steer you wrong.

I did not read the original entry fully. I see he is now probably out of warranty and thus has more elasticity on oill choice.

Where is that video? Becasue this is not that video.

Did you mean to say do or do not?

Agreed to a point. Just didn't think it was a really widespread issue. There are lots of pretty neglected Audi engines, oil-wise, that haven't demonstrated catastrophic failure. Yet.
We are on the same page. I have a friend whose Q5 with the 2.0 was burning 1 quart every 750 miles. Audi measured it an installed a factory fresh short block. The car had 95000 miles and my friend couldn’t wait to dump it. I said it was a bad call a the clock was reset and the odds were that this new engine would be fine. It was gone before I could try to buy it.

If no longer in warranty maybe some HPL Euro version fr the 508 spec to get the motor clean and keep it that way.

If not any of the recommended 508 commercially available that keeps you happy and a couple runs with EC30 or EC40.

Better than or same as maybe:
  • Audi/VW 502.00/505.00
  • Castrol EDGE 0W-20
  • Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20

?
I don't think this vehicle calls at any point for VW502 though. I know my car does, but it's a 2018. Whether it's necessary or not since my car does call for that, I stick with 0w40s that meet that spec erring on the side of my meathead neanderthal thicker is better solution since I'm tuned.

Define "better than"?

For any oils with a given approval(s) - the oils will have performance meeting the same specifications. So the Catrol Edge or M1 that are VW508 vs. the LM with the VW508 - there will no measurable difference for a normal/daily driven vehicle/engine.

The 502 oils are typically the European 40 grades so like M1 0W40 Euro etc. Those are full SAPS oils that are not necessary for today's low-sulfur U.S. fuels. With that said you can certainly run those thicker oils if you want. Here lies the crux of the thick/thin argument here on BITOG that plays out basically every day at this point....with the 20 grade be enough? I say yes else why would an OEM specify it? There isn't a conspiracy here by manufacturers to hose your engine with thinner oils but there is incentive for them to gain any bit of mpg they can which is part of what drives them to engineer engines to handle thinner and thinner oils as time marches on. Others say no you should run a higher grade. You'll have to do your homework and decide for yourself, a good chunk of this forum is dedicated to this question but nobody here will ever show that someone's engine expired earlier than the owner wanted b/c they ran a thinner oil called out my the manufacturer.

The book says:

- Standard VW 504 00, ACEA C3, ACEA C4, API SP or ILSAC GF-6A. All viscosity classes within these standards are permitted.

I was leaning towards the Castrol EDGE 0W-20.

Maybe I mean "better price" because the one I listed is pricier than Mobil 1.

Oh. Well that's an important piece of info 🤣

You need an oil with the VW504 approval then....they will be Euro 30 grades. None of your list has this.
