Hello everyone, 3 months ago I purchased a 2018 Audi s5, EA839 3.0T v6 with a tune ofc. Ive tried doing my own research and finding out what oil to use and I am just clueless, I was hoping you guys can point me in the right direction for what to buy🙏, it would also be really ideal if it was available on FCP Euro. So the previous owner was running Motul 8100 X-CESS GEN2 5W-40, and I see a lot of people on forums/fb running this oil on this car. IG to simplify my question do you think I should continue running the thicker oil or should i switch back to the OEM approved 0w20? The reason I ask this question because recently a video has surfaced on this engine blowing up for using a thicker oil, granted its just 1 engine of many being blown even with OEM oil but I would love to hear your thoughts/advice, Thank You.

What does your owners manual say for the VW XXX spec

VW 504/507
VW 508
VW 502 (doubtful)

I have the OEM manual and it legit doesn't say anything about oil spec, even the online manual doesn't say anything. There is no oil spec sticker in my engine Bay as-well. But if I go on fcp euro or any other website it only shows 508 spec

My stepmom has a 24 S5 Sportback. Just got it a few weeks ago. She will be running Amsoil LS-VW once it gets its first oil change.
Edit: Amsoil says spec is VW 508 btw

That's surprising. Not very VW like lol

That is nonsense.

Yet another thick vs. thin conundrum.

I love how he says to use an SP oil to combat the oil "thickness" when cold. Nothing to do with it. Also, that SP is designed for DI. Nope. I wouldn't worry about anything in that video, there was something else going on that caused that damage. LSPI would show up on piston crowns too and in more that one cylinder. Calling that guy an idiot would be kind.

If you want to continue using the Motul, go for it. If you want to use the RECOMMENDED 0W-20, you could do that too. That engine will run well on either and most anything in between.

Edit: just did real quick check and found at least 3 places that recommend VW 508.00 0W-20 for the 2018 S5 V6. If you had the RS5, the recommendation is a VW 504.00 or a 5W-40 Euro. Since you are tuned, I would go with the latter.

I was thinking of getting aftermarket warranty in the future, would you know if that would affect it or void it? thank you for the advice

Over here the oil for that car is a synthetic 5W30 ACEA C3 with VW 504/507.

To answer your question directly, No a 5W40 will not damage your engine.

If you are worried about LSPI then get an oil that is also API SP rated.

For example Valvoline SynPower XL-III 5W30 is API SP, API SN Plus, API SN, API SM, ACEA C3, BMW LL-04 Approved, MB 229.51 Approved, MB 229.52, MB 229.31, VW 504.00 Approved, VW 507.00 Approved, Prosche C30.

LPSI that's caused by oil would be due to detergents like calcium, not the viscosity.

Below is a screenshot from the 2018 Audi s5 owner manual. All it says is to use the oil listed on the sticker under the hood. In the absence of that sticker, if I were OP, I would use what FCP Euro recommends for the car.

Notice in the screenshot above (post #17) it just says follow the sticker, but as the OP says, there is no sticker.

However it then goes on to say use a ACEA C3 (or SN) oil in an emergency.

The VW C3 oil is VW504/507, I would use that with API SP (the SN improvement).

i.e. an oil with API SP, ACEA C3 and VW 504 00.
