Your car should have the oil approval you need on a sticker under the hood and it should be listed in the owners manual. Thinking it's VW504 00 so a 30 grade Euro basically.

ECS Tuning sells dipstick tube for your model. So, do you have a tube at all and just the dipstick missing, or tube is not there?
Doesn't matter. It's a 1 time use part. See the pic I posted above.

I fail to see why if being careful you need to pitch them every time. I seem to recall someone was just replacing the o-ring each time I read somewhere forum/FB.

How would that even happen using it 2x? I mean it's either tight when you rotate it into place or it's not. You can see if it's broken by looking at it.
Audi sells a measuring stick. It's a universal stick that you have to adjust for your particular engine. It has a bunch of #'s on it. You put the top stopper @ say #140 and the oil level should be around #30.
Here's the new one on my bench for my son's S3. The worm-gear threading and o-ring are what holds it in. Just has a stop so you it can't go any further. Is the A4 one different?
That little bump is all that keeps it from backing out. Not the threads as you mentioned. That bump falls into a divot and locks in place.
Ok but there's nothing to break off on this.
That bump often breaks or gets worn down.
Ahhh ok got it now. I've changed these things a bunch and never really looked at it close I guess!
