GDI Engine Owners - What Oil ?

The Tundra which is TT also. I’ve seen great results with EP 0W20. The Pilot currently use Amsoil SS 0W30. I’ve got one more oil change worth for the Pilot with the same oil. After that probably EP 0W20 or ESP 0W30.

10 years with GDI engines. I use cheap synthetic [ store brand or name brand on sale]. Usually 5W30. As long as it meets the latest SAE spec - currently SP. If long trips, in good weather, the OCI will be over 8,000 miles. Short trips cold weather-4,000miles. In my opinion the only thing to avoid with GDI engines is short and cold trips. Gasoline will build up in the oil.
Yes the API SP oils are designed to prevent low speed pre-ignition in direct injection gas engines. Some oils meet SP but don't explicitly state it on the bottle. If the oil shows Mercedes MB252 (I think) specs then it should meet or exceed API SP.

It is designed to help prevent it.

And there are European approvals that do the same. You don’t necessarily need the API license.

How many threads can one make about finding oil to use?

🤣🤣🤣🤣👍

For GDI engines - the best base stocks with the lowest amount of viscosity improvers and NOACK are key to prevent intake valve deposits . Valvoline Advanced and M1 are very good in those respects , Quaker State Full Synthetic is the best in the value price category , Pennzoil Platinum is in the middle and Castrol is surprisingly poor . If I were to keep a GDI vehicle long term I would be concerned with the oil I chose as well as the OCI I decided to run .
Tell me how you came to conclusion that QS is “best”

First , a former member tribologist here posted a excel spread sheet of popular oils along with their calculated (% VII) and QSUD 5W30 had a lower VII % number than many other 5W30 synthetic oils . Next , it was someone else resurrected this older thread - so don’t be hate’n on me for oil posts which result in a high number of comments (both positive and negative) .

I was not under the impression that dude was a tribologist. From what I saw he was a bit whacky in some of his assertions and "calculations".

I bumped up from 0w-20 to 5w-30 (both M1 EP) and installed a catch can to grab any blowby and prevent it from getting sucked back into the PCV and coating the valves. May not be a 100% solution but better than nothing, and I do get about a tablespoon of water/oil in there every 5000 miles, more water in colder months.

Of our 5 vehicles 3 are direct injection and two of those are twin turbos. The twin turbos get Edge 0w40 and the GDI Mazda gets Pennzoil 0w30 Euro LX.

Hate to bust your bubble but that member ain’t a teibologist. You avoided my question so worry about your own post “count”. You make hundreds of threads about almost the same thing. I cut oil filters open from many vehicles. There is NO BEST OIL period. Provide facts for your assumption please. Don’t worry about my factual posts either. No one “hates” you either. So, please act civil.

Thank You

First , I was NOT referring to 540 Rat - don’t go there . Next , I was referring to a past member who while his calculations may not have been perfect at least showed trends based on what public knowledge was available for oils . I simply used the information mainly to look at oils which should have trended downwards with respect to VII’s based on their make up which could be better for GDI engines . *Now that I have a good system down for preventative intake valve cleaning (CRC IVC) I worry less about intake deposits and currently am a fan of WM available M1 EP (5W30) , M1 ESP (0W30) and M1 Euro FS oils (0W40). I’m still intrigued by Valvoline R&P but don’t think I need it yet after low OCI’s with good oils and Rislone engine cleaner used every few low OCI’s of less than 4,000 miles . Lastly , my PCV valve is stupid easy to access , so I remove and spray clean it with non - chlorinated brake cleaner every 15,000 miles to make sure it rattles good .

This oil supposedly has characteristics that make it better for Hybrid automobiles. The oil in a GDI engine would suffer some of the same problems. Worth a try?

No I was not referring to that miserable website. That guy is not wacky, he is just stupid.

Mobil 1 ESP 0w20 goes in my 2021 Honda Passport J35Y6 GDI engine and following the MM I easily get the recommended 10,000 miles out of it.

My Cadillac XT4 has DI with a turbo and it gets NAPA full synthetic 0W-20 and I change it between 3,000-4,000 miles. Look for the Dexos rating on the oil bottle because low speed preignition can happen.
