Filter change every other oil change - anyone doing it?

First post from new member here I'm not a real motorhead but like reading through the forums on here.

I have a 2014 V6 Honda Accord coupe with a manual transmission. The car only has 20,000 miles on it and I must say it is kind of fun to drive. I drive conservatively most of the time but the car sees redline pretty often on 2nd and 3rd gear pulls. Because I drive it pretty aggressively at times I'm sticking to 5,000 mile oil changes at which point my maintenance minder is usually at 20 or 30%. The car uses no oil between changes and runs iike a champ.

The oil change process is easy overall, but the filter is set up to where it makes a pretty big mess on the frame and also splashes some oil on the tire and rim if I'm not super careful.

I have been using Fram silver can filters (Tough Guard I believe), but am considering getting Ultras or Synthetic Endurance and switching the filters every other oil change. I figure an oil filter rated for 20,000 miles should definitely be good for a year and 10,000 miles. I've also read that an oil filter might actually become more effective at filtration when it is slightly clogged by particulates and the rationale made sense to me.

I also change the oil on my dad's 2012 CRV. The filter is super convenient on that car so I'll stick to 6K changes and silver cans for that one.

Am I crazy?

We can't actually tell if a member is crazy or not.
Let's just say some hide their sanity better than others.

Seriously, regarding running an oil filter for 2 OCIs: Lots of people do it here.
IIRC, the 2010 2.4l I tended OKed reuse of the oil filter.
This could be a Honda thing across all models, but I do not know.

Lots of discussion about it over the years. Many here use a good filter for more than one OCI. Then there are people like myself that would rather not leave a filter loaded with dirty oil to mix with fresh clean oil as soon as the engine is fired up. I'm not a fan of removing a filter in use to attempt to drain it and reuse it either, people do that too. In any event get ready for some interesting and possible volatile discussion.

In the owners manual it may say that idea is ok so likely you engine will last a very long time.

The owner's manual for many of the cars I have owned suggest you can use a filter for 2 OCIs. V8s of the 70s 80s and 90s and some V6 Dodge engines. I try for a larger filter with a wire backed media and use the filter for multiple years sometimes.
My 99 Dodge has had the same filter for 4 years now but I don't drive it much, maybe 16,000 miles on it a present.

I used to occasionally run my oil filters for two changes on my previous Civic (a 2006 coupe). I look at it this way, what is the difference if you run the oil and the filter for a full 10,000 miles vs someone who changes the oil at 5000 miles and leaves the same filter on for that same amount of total mileage?
I enjoyed those oil changes when I wasn’t changing the filter because that’s always the messiest part of the change. I don’t do that with my current Civic because I drive it a lot more and my OCIs are longer (typically 9-10k)

Do it on my lawnmower once in a while. Might do it on the OG Ultra on the Volvo but not sure yet. One could just try & find a low cost filter to change each time. Some here that are not interested in changing them due to hard location to get it will run them twice too.

Sometimes depending on vehicle, filter, and situation …
For example by using a Fumoto valve - I can do the midway oil change quickly with no ramps - need ramps to do filter …

A popular and oft discussed topic here on Bitog, I'm surprised you missed them if you like reading through the forums.

Many discuss a Fram filter in particular. Sorry if there are repeats, there are just so many:

I best make another coffee 😷

Both of my vehicles get early oil changes (by mileage) due to their usage, but I use the filters to the recommended mileage interval, or a year. That means they get done during every second oil change.

I see no upside to not changing the filter at every oil change, other than cost. I buy in bulk, so cost really isn't that big a deal to me. Some will claim Earths resources, etc. That's fine. Everyone has to decide on their own what's important to them.

If you have a clean engine, probably not a big deal. For me, I change it every oil change. Nobody is wrong, just different views.
