Do Microgard select oil filters leak?

NEVER had any brand of oil filter leak. I mean, it's like changing a light bulb. Too easy. I was taught this at a very young age, 12 or 13. Remove the old filter, clean the filter base with a rag, take a smear of old oil and rub it into the new gasket, Spin it on, go 1/4 turn with the wrench to snug it. Wipe filter clean. Check for leaks after you fill engine. Dump the oil in the City storm drain.... That was 1979. Then my dad said " okay, you're in charge of oil changes from here on out". That was the last time he was ever under a car. He was in his early 30's. Then it snowballed to brakes, tune ups, battery swaps, radiator flushes, carb fulel filters, points & condensers, belts, wash, wax, etc. Yeah, he got his money's worth out of me boy !!!! No free rides in that house !!!! ( I did do a double gasket ONCE....what a mess )

I ve seen oils with seal swell (conditioners cause the old oil filter to pop the gasket and stick to the engine, if not checked a double gasket install is possible.

never seen oil filter gasket pop off with standard oils, only the ones with seal conditioner additives.

I’ve seen Wix on here leaking from the seam. Not a PG though, doesn’t mean there couldn’t be nobody has achieved perfection.

From my work as a service advisor/manager at multiple car dealerships I can tell you that I have seen some oil change jobs screwed up royally by quick lube guys. I know that industry folks will tell you that you can expect to receive professionally trained service by factory trained technicians at dealerships, not always but more often than what you might think that is BS.

A lot of these guys have no more than a high school diploma and the training they received in their high school auto shop class or from a family member or one of their friends that they tooled old around with on some random vehicles or equipment. They end up saving money so they can buy their own tools and work their way up into better positions at the dealership level. Yes some of these guys go to technical schools but many, if not most, start off as detailers or doing quick lube and work their way up to being regular technicians.

I say all that to say that even these guys can screw up something as simple as screwing on an oil filter correctly to wear a leak is caused. Learn to do it yourself so you can't complain about someone else potentially making a mistake and then you'll only have yourself to blame 🤯🤣

I had a Ford that had oil starting to drip from the bottom of the oil filter. I could have gone on a website and claimed oil filter xyz leak in a review. It was the oil filter adapter that had a leaking gasket to the block. It was an o ring gasket flattened with the passage of time that failed.

I don't think they are any more or less likely to leak than any other brand. In theory it's possible but it's very rare to receive a return on an oil filter, and when they are returned, it's usually because it's the wrong one due to a mistake or the wrong information being provided.

Obviously neither of my vehicles have oil filters given that they're electric, BUT for friends, family, etc. I have used nothing but MicroGard Select across a variety of vehicles since they were released and have not had a single issue.

The MicroGard select is one of the best available at this time

Only had one oil filter leak. Completely my fault. It was a Hastings back in the mid eighties. I had a seal stick to the mount base. Luckily caught it during the post oil change leak check

I installed a microgard select on my crv and it was seeping when I took it off. Yes I installed it properly. I think the silicone base gasket was to blame

It's hard to tell if a leak at the base is the gasket or the crimp seam unless you really try to distinguish the two possible leak sources. Did you try to tighten it more before removal to see if it might have loosened up some?

FWIW on the family fleet the only filters I expect to see a little seepage from are aftermarket - Fram, Wix, Puro, doesn’t matter. Lathe-cut o-rings need a little more attention to seal.

Never had a problem with the P-ring on OEM filters. I installed a P-ring Carquest Blue(PG) and I had to mangle it off. The seal held good.

I just did an oil change on a crv with a microguard select xl with the p gasket, properly installed. There was a couple drops of oil on the bottom of the filter, didn’t even look further into it lol. 🤷‍♂️
