Cobb Tuning Hit With $2.9 Million Fine Over Emissions Defeat Devices

It's cumulative. I don't know how anyone can argue that the EPA didn't help clean up our air. How is this even an argument?

We should just go back to no cats and leaded fuel. Worked well for so many, didn't it?
No one is saying that.

The issue is the lopsided-ness of it. US Steel dumps a bunch of toxic crap in the lake causing water intake closures, closing a NATIONAL PARK, and no fishing and gets a whopping $601,242 fine+cleanup costs split between the EPA and Indiana. Why is US Steel, a company with a massive list of environmental mismanagement essentially given a very slight slap on the wrist while the tuners who have significantly less money get fines that actually hurt?

I agree people forget how bad cities were before modern emission standards never mind diesel buses and trucks belching out black smoke. That "for off-road use" label only goes so far
But there’s a balance. We’re now splitting hairs over a fraction of a ppb of emissions. When a 50 mpg modern small diesel is a gross polluter, while an 8 mpg pig suv is a partial zero emissions vehicle, you know it’s too far…

You're right, then we shouldn't enforce it. I don't get how this is the correlation. Just because they should have nailed US Steel to the wall, everyone else is off the hook? We were discussing this tuner issue, not US Steel.

Why is the company who didn’t directly affect the lives of millions getting a larger fine than the company who did and continues to do so?

Holy crap. Why is this the justification? What are we discussing here? Again this was about a tuner being investigated. Now we're having an all out attack on the EPA. This thing is about as off topic as it can get at this point. I give up. I'm out...

You do understand that it has taken decades for these gains in air quality?
Funny how the precise causes of the problem were know but population density and urban sprawl, the main driving factors were just allowed to climb unchecked. Almost like the state government only ever cared about collecting tax money and house seats.
So instead of acting, they just allowed the population to increase in these areas by up to 50% in some place. Then kicked the can down the road and just just hoped technology would someday clear the air and if not oh well, they can always say they tried.

EPA deserves to be attacked. They were granted nearly unchecked power, for a while they were responsible with said power and recently decided to abuse that power for all it's worth.

They did act by passing the CAA as once the science had caught up. BTW.. Cities and town had their own clean air ordinances going back to the 1800s (Chicago, Salt Lake City, Cleveland, etc)

Funny how running a vehicle without proper emissions equipment is the end of the world, but they still approve coal fired power plants to be built that beyond a doubt negatively impact the public at large and leave behind mountains of poisonous ash.
Things aren't getting worse they're just getting way more obvious.
Not in the US.

And what did that get them? At least 7 of the top 10 most air polluted cities in the united states to this day.

So you're telling me the government hasn't approved a coal fired power plant since 1968?
No what I'm saying is that new plants have not been approved without the use of scrubbers and other emissions technologies. Coal is essentially going away and being replaced by NatGas. It has been going this way for years but it may reverse itself because Chevron was overturned. Time will tell.

It's getting them much cleaner air compared to what it was 10, 20, 40, 60 yrs ago. This all happened with an increase in the population and numbers of vehicles on the road.

The EPA needs to ban drive throughs if emissions are an issue.
I would settle for just being able to drive my bike through the drive through. Most places, if you try to do that, they will tell you that they won't serve bikes in the drive through. I have been turned down on multiple occasions.
