To price the vehicle go to Edmunds and get dealer trade in price appraise. That is likely where you might expect to price your SUV to get some attention. You also are not listing the issues with the SUV- I find that troubling. That you will tell them when they call is in my view not honorable. Your ad should be full disclosure, your SUV could end up in some single Mom trying to make it- the last thing she needs is to unknowingly inherit someone else's problems,

You don't list the Year, prior history, mileage nothing in this thread, no do you list the price or show us the ad. I sense you know why it is not selling- trying to get high dollar for a vehicle with a major issue. Anytime a used car is price right and listed accurately- they sell. I sense you are not doing either.

I did a quick check on Edmunds. a 2014 Explorer with 100k miles in need of a major mechanical repair shows dealer trade in of $5463, average private party selling private part of $6841. With the though of major engine work- I think those prices are even high.

I did a craigslist search and this is the closest I can find to what you are selling in western michigan, but can't be yours as it is listed in excellent condition. This Seller does not list the mileage- which is a huge flag in my eyes of a seller not wanting to tell the truth- if they won't even disclose the mileage what else are they not disclosing:

That's gotta be his - trying to hide everything while pricing it 2x what the market value is LOL.

OP, that's a 10-12k SUV all day long. And again, you need to disclose that CEL and any problems in your ad.

So why not fix it up and drive it? Yes, it will cost $2k to fix as the transverse 3.5 is a [censored] to work on. But once it's done you should be set for a while especially if you have them do the water pump while they are in there. That's about the only trouble point on those early Ecoboosts and can easily be remedied by better oil and more frequent changes which you can do.

Probably wants to replace it to keep up with the Joneses. Can't be driving a clapped out 4 year old SUV with a replaced timing chain, people will think lesser of you! Besides, a 2014 Explorer doesn't post well on Facebook since nobody will be impressed by it.

There is no demand or desire for 100k Ford Explorer out there. It lacks the name Honda or Toyota affixed onto it.

You are scared to keep it due to upcoming issues just like the reputation of a Ford Explorer is. And you also have a lurking issue just like people expect.

I'd try for a above trade in but close or just trade it in so you can dump with clear conscience on a dealer who rips you.

Perhaps it is listed to high, thats the obvious answer. I'm seeing these listed for around $26k or higher at local lots so I figured knock a few grand off that and see if there is interest. Clearly there is not. My rationale for not listing a ton of info about problems in the listings is simply that I have found that to be one of the ice breaker questions people ask. Combine that with a total lack of interest and whats the point right now?

I do like the idea of taking it off the market until spring and might go that route. Might look into doing the chains, but it does look like a huge PITA on this vehicle. Indie shop estimated it at $2100, though I wonder what that would balloon to after they finish...

How long have you had it listed for? Selling a $20k + car takes a lot longer than a $2k car.

Fix it up, and sell it right. Otherwise, you're gonna have to take the hit and sell it as a mechanic's special. I assume this is the 3.5L Explorer Sport Ecoboost and not the troublesome 1990s-mid 2000s version with the 4.0L SOHC Cologne V6.

I dunno about Michigan, but in the Bay Area we have a lot that people consign their cars to. They take care of the marketing and wash it. There's also an app you can use to sell your car, but of course they will take a cut.

What app?

You could take it to Carmax and see what they offer. "We'll buy your car even if you don't buy ours!" as their commercials say. I had one car appraised there and they were insultingly low. The car was pretty much mint condition, only a few years old. They dinged me for "marks on the pinch-welds" from using jackstands. Really??

But YMMV. It's worth a shot.

It's hard to sell a $20k+ car privately. Almost no one has that much cash laying around and they need financing. Which is a lot easier to get in the finance office of a dealer. People who buy private party are looking for a beater $5k or under.

I've got the spiritual twin, the Taurus and it's a close fit on that side of the engine. They say you can get at it from the wheel well and top but it just looks like a knuckle busting experience. I'd shop around - $2100 seems about right and it may also be worth it to get a dealer's estimate just for good measure. I don't think it would go up much from that as (at least on the Taurus) you don't have to remove suspension or exhaust so rusty bolts shouldn't be an issue.

The rest of that drivetrain is solid - the 6f55 is a stout box and I think the PTU is a different design than the other Fords (I've got 0 issues in 129k and never changed the fluid) and seems good. I'm honestly expecting over 200k out of the Taurus.

Where are you finding these 100k mile Explorers for $26k? Here is an AutoTempest search for up to 200 miles away from the Grand Rapids area where 6 Explorer Sports are listed with similar mileage and years (I did a range of 90k-110k miles and 2014 and 2015 MY) where the average asking price is $20,463 and a high of $22,497 with no needed repairs. I'm not saying that there might not be some examples out there, but the market seems to be around $20k for that year/make/model and mileage in good repair.

I'm not trying to be rude, I just think some re-evaluating values might be in order. I mean, no one is biting on your ad at its current price and those people don't even know of the extensive repair that needs to be done.

Hey guys I have a 2007 Toyota Corolla for sale. $ 14,095 I see these for sale at Toyota dealers for 17k all day long. It has 100k and needs a muffler along with a new transmission but that's for BITOG members-only. The ad doesn't mention these needed repairs because I am unethical.

OP this is how you sound right now.

Needs a major expense but not disclosed in the ad. And apparently overpriced if it didn't need any work.

I had a Subaru appraised at CarMax-they were less than what I ultimately traded it in for at the Hyundai dealer-but not by much.

That's how I see it. This will be a very tough private sell. Pretty much any big dealer I know of will buy vehicles if you buy another one from them or not. You obviously aren't going to get what you want, but it's a way to get rid of it and get something for it.

If I were spending that much coin, I'd at least want a warranty (which unless I'm mistaken, is not offered on 4 year old vehicles from a private sale).

That was the impression I was getting but I hope I'm missing something
