BMW LL04 and LL12FE in Australia with high sulphur content in fuel?

All the E46 BMW’s used 0W-40 in Australia and so many other brands using 0W-20. I wouldn’t use 10W-XX in anything even if free. 0W-30 in my 2005 BA Falcon with 350,000 on it.
Let me know when you get to 550,000 km like my families old XD Falcon on 10W40 from Woolies.
It's was still going strong when we took it to the wreckers in Renmark. Later we saw it still being driven.

Barra 350,000 and now run in (0W-30) with a litre of 5W-20 ester cleaner. If you’re going to run a 40W, use 0/5W-40. You’ll see better UOA’s.

Trust me. No one wanted to know the UOA of the oil which came out of that Ford.
Fun fact: I used to reuse the sump oil in my Datsun 180B wagon which leaked so fast it never needed a full change.

I’ve been doing this for four decades. I used thick oil way back but read so many VOA/UOA’s and realised I was wrong.

I don’t get this sulfur thing - we are about to spend +/- $10m to fuel a ship with 10 ppm. IMO, this will take the path of power windows eventually where some refineries don’t want to make dirty MGO and the cleaner fuels as well …

Costco 98 for far less than 91 price anywhere. All four vehicles use 98 exclusively. Two Costco (Mobil), two BP. Probably move the Suzuki SX4 to BP as well.
Well, if the price is right. As I recall the last time I had a Costco card was in Canberra some 6 years ago, and the Costco 98 was about the price of the 95 at BP. Wasnt worth the cost of the Costco membership given there wasnt much else of interest in Costco.

I only do about 4-6000kms a year anyway, so I dont lose sleep over petrol prices - fill it up when it needs it once a month or so and move onto to things I can control ;)

Costco for the Falcon only from now on. Useful for batteries, tyres, cheese etc. and the occasional Skippy peanut butter!

I just changed the oil yesterday in my 530i.
The oil I took out was in fine condition if a little dirty for only 1,700 km over 12 months.
From the service records this is what they used:

Just posting for interest sake as it's also a LL04. Kind of impressive specs if you open the link.
Garages probably doing same thing for euros as they do everything else. One size fits all oil which meets as many standards as possible.
What I'm saying is; your garage probably has a 205 L drum of that Ravenol they use for basically every car they service.

The engine was completely happy with this oil. Just at 12 months time to change.
It's now full of Castrol Edge 0W/40 LL01 BMW approval.
Can confirm this is a really good oil. Have used it plenty in a variety of cars, diesel Volvos, Hyundai 1.6T, Volvo 3.0L T6, VW EA288 2.0L TDI. Stopped oil burning in the T6, Hyundai and VW TDI and they all run very quietly. Good stuff.

I still wouldn’t use 10W anything let alone 20W. Four decades tribological expertise.

Usually more wear. Take a look at Oil Geek on YouTube for differences in wear UOA for thinner startup viscosity.

Need though to consider the vastly different climate here in Australia. We're currently in a cold snap and the night time minimum temperature is 10 oC.
LSJ data is from a much, much, much colder climate where night time temperatures may dip to -20 to -40 oC, and daytime temperaturesare below freezing for months. This makes a radical difference to cold start viscosity.

Imagine almost any oil would be like gravy at those temps.

Not saying it doesn't still make a difference and I'm not saying your wrong, I think you are correct. But we need to compare apples to apples here.

PS I use the 25W oil in a race 355 SBC I blue printed myself. It has bearing clearances and oil pump to suit, and I drilled the lifter galley plugs 30 thou for timing chain squirters to quickly bleed the oil gallery of air pockets.

I use Castrol Edge 25W50 for the valvetrain, which is stout.

Yes the B48 is noticeable louder at idle now but accelerates just as smoothly.
The engine liked it. price is good too.

Any UOA’s you can post?

A YouTube promoter?
He did the Gibbs Driven Racing Oils. Now with Total Seal

Climate irrelevant, but it was -6C last week here in Australia. Cold flow pumpability critical for longevity.

Pumpability is binary, as long as the oil doesn’t gel under shear in the vicinity of the oil pickup it will be pumped.

And at the temperatures being discussed here it’s not even close to that.
