BMW B58 Engine Oil Recommendation

It’s not for TU2 engines. Only the FE versions.
When did the TU2 engine start being used?

Because my basic research suggests the TU2 isn’t fitted to many vehicles yet having only been in production for under a year.

Most BMW Dealers, BMW Assist Mobile Techs use LL04 0w30 in the B58 in my 745Le

Which I am happy about because I don’t want LL12 or LL17, if anything I am looking at using the thickest LL04 possible for my interim oil and filter change.

Though I must admit that I have been mulling over doing one change with LL17.

To see if it actually makes a difference to economy.

I suspect switching to the new Michelin E Primacy tyres that have been designed for BMW and Mercedes would do more.

But you don’t know if you don’t try.

I am on target for 45k miles this year.

So there should be some figures to mull over

In reality you can use a Longlife-04 oil in nearly every gasoline BMW ever made except for the M models.
Interesting ... So are M models stuck with LL-01 FE oils? I just picked up a 2024 M3 CS and the manual still states BMW LL-01 FE oil at 0W-30 which really doesn't give me many options. What would you recommend for the S58? Should I stick with the factory oil or switch to something like Redline 0W-30? Which states its a "suitable replacement" for BMW LL 01 FE & LL 12 FE

IMO, BMW is trying to keep their CAFE credits by recommending oils with a HTHS of under 3.5cp. This means no LL01 or LL04 and has been this way since 2015. LL12fe is the low saps version of LL01FE.

If you want a non-dealer branded oil there's M1 ESP 5w30 or Shell Euro L 5w30 which are both LL04 and are available at retail stores. If I did my own oil changes I would use one of these simply because it's comparatively cheap and I'm changing oil on time (1yr) rather than miles.

Redline is a good street oil for track use.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't need it to be available at retail and I'm okay with ordering and waiting as I really won't be using the car every day. It will be more of a weekend toy / drive to work on nice days. I had good luck using Redline on my RAM TRX which had excessively loud lifter tick. The redline quieted it down a bunch and I saw consistently cooler temps as well. I also reached out to High Performance Lubricants and they recommended the Euro Passenger Car Engine Oil @ 5W-30. I am probably going to have this car ecu tuned eventually so I guess I like the idea of a "premium" oil.

The safe bet is probably sticking with the dealer branded oil and changing it on a strict 5K/6 month schedule?

I've used the HPL Euro 5w30 but because I'm not driving as much as I used to I transitioned to Indy shop bulk 5w40 (Liqui Moly). For my own application (435i) I don't feel I'm getting my monies worth based on the low miles. I could go longer but I'm not in the mood to deal with any "You missed an oil change" BS from prospective buyers who pulled a Carfax.

Dealer (Castrol) oil is going to be fine. I don't know why BMW owners sometimes knock it. It holds viscosity really well.

No kidding, Red Line oil cured your Ram lifter tick?

I'd say it has reduced it ~75% at this point. I first saw a noticeable difference when I spiked the factory oil(Ultra Platinum) with Lubegard Biotech. After ~500 miles with that additive I'd say I noticed ~25% reduction in noise. That led me into looking into it further and I saw redline was highly recommended. I switched to Redline and couldn't help but spike it as well but a much reduced rate (used only 8 ounces). Its been about 4,000 miles now and its helped tremendously. The truck just seems to run smoother/better overall as well.

Were you happy with the HPL Euro blend besides the price tag? I agree I'm sure BMW did there homework on this and it will do just fine especially if I'm changing it every 5K/6months. I'll probably switch to something more "premium" in the future after the car is tuned. It looks like Redline also offers a Euro 5W-30 blend which is a suitable replacement for LL-04.

Would the Redline 0W-40/LL-01 be better for my application than the Redline Euro 5W-40/LL-04? From what I understand the LL-04 spec is made for cars with OPF/DPF which my car doesn't have.

The tech document says LL01 is technically suitable for S58 without gasoline particulate filter. I don't think any S58 in the US have GPF so it's fine to use LL01. B58TU2 is very different from S58TU0, based on my understanding anyway, so the requirements for B58TU2 and S58TU0 are different.

Thats what it seems like from the various sources I've read. Taking price or Enviromental effects out of the equation is the LL 01 spec generally going to perform better due to not being limited by GPF cleanliness and Low/Mid SAP requirements?

If you need LL01FE for warranty go this:

Motul LL01FE

HTHS is 3.4. It is basically LL01 for LL01FE needs.

Personally, I would go this just because Castrol has language that is suitable for LL01FE and that can carry you in case if warranty considering it is LL01 approved and IMO best oil for Euro cars:

Castrol Edge 0W30

Thanks for that recommendation! I just did a quick search and it looks like a solid oil. I'm going to do some further research over the weekend as I'm still learning this is new to me. From what I can tell it looks to have high ZDDP which is a good thing from what I have read? Also looks like it doesn't really have much if any Moly in it but I'm guessing that's what the titanium is for? I'm going off the 5W-30 VOA as I don't see a VOA for the 0W-30 blend.

0W30 Castrol is their premier product. Much , MUCH better than 5W30 Castrol. It is 50% PAO, old fashion additive pack with high Zinc, Calcium, lots os ZDDP. Moly is down as it is old formula with high calcium. Moly is bumped in newer oils to make up for lower calcium, Zinc etc. Magnesium is bumped up to in newer oils. But in S58 you won’t have LSPI issues.
I bet you can find VOA but Edge 0W30 but here is my UOA (righ column) and you can see additive pack. Take into consideration that this oil has KV100 11.6 and HTHS 3.58 which indicates very stout base stock:

Well my engine didn't explode so I imagine everything was fine. I would remain with a 30 grade if using redline. The 40 grades have a really high HTHS which I don't think it's needed based on the cooling capacity of your engine.

LL04 is for use with ULSG and ULSD. It has been used in Europe for almost two decades and predates OPF.

Well they are wrong. The PDF I posted is published by BMW for internal use and it clearly states LL01 is suitable for S58 without GPF. Using either LL01 or LL01FE is fine as long as there isn't a GPF. Here is a list of LL01 approved oil according to BMW:

According to this BMW LL01 approved list, Motul doesn't have any oil that is LL01FE approved currently... I remember back in Sept this list was longer :ROFLMAO:

This includes only BMW Group fluids.
Motul is serious company! They never list anything that is not approved and remove from sale everything that has newer specifications or lost approval.

It also includes Liqui Moly Special Tec B FE 0W-30 and another non-BMW group oil so it is not just about BMW group engine oils. I used to see Motul Specific LL-01 FE on this list but it got dropped recently lol

Not sure what is going on. Motul stopped sale of API SN version of X-Cess as soon as they had API SP version. They are pretty good with approval stuff and I would trust them on that.
BMW has not updated the approval process since 2018, except for including back 0WXX oils in LL01 and LL04.
So, if that is the fact, I would say Motul is maybe planning to discontinue Specific LL01FE for something else.

Maybe BMW did not like that Specific LL01FE was basically a regular LL-01 oil with 0.1 less HTHS. The add pack is also not LSPI friendly. The new Motul LL01FE is thinner like all the rest.
