I also married a woman who knows more about body work then I do....I loathe body work. She gets a zen thing out of it. We both bought our first vehicles. I sure miss my '76 Olds Cutlass Salon with T-tops and rare Hurst shifter(not ont the build sheet, only a small sticker on door jam. This car modified by Hurst Perfomance Inc..blah blah. pretty cool). Sold that car to some guy for 650.00 Saw it a year later full of holes and with the tonau(sp) cover ripped off.

My son-in-law was a college golf all-American and is a club pro now. A wonderful husband for my daughter, but clueless on mechanics. He brings his leased Impala over and says the oil change light is on.
(upon further review it's been on for XX months)
about 10,000 miles on dino
I say well I've got the stuff let's change oil.
Drain oil looks like shoe polish........

Don't buy a dark green off-lease Impala from Indy.

I was tweaking my dad's old Porsche at 14 y/o, someone had to do it. I had a good backround from my mom's dad, a Olds mechanic for 30 years. I know what the posters mean about kids. My cousin's boys would not know a thing if it was not for me. Her dad had a union car and paid ZERO attn to it. I try to tell people, tires loose air and engines burn oil. that's all they really need to know, but...????

I grew up working on one of the hardest cars to work on.... a Ford Aerostar. Add a 1977 Mercedes Benz 280E to that list... something I was supposed to get but too costly to repair. I got into an accident with the 1994 Grand Cherokee. I used Chevron Supreme in that Jeep. When I got the 1995, I ran Mobil Drive Clean Plus to clean out the crud of the original owner, who only put 65,000 miles from Feb 95-May 2003. I ran 2 short OCIs with GIII "Synthetic", then 2 2500 mile OCIs with Delo 15w40. Now it has Mobil 1 0w40. This weekend, I will be changing it with M1 EP 15w50 (thin 50 wt... almost a thick 40 pretty much). I drive the ZJ around alot. I have 91,000 miles on the Jeep right now. I am even going to take my Jeep on a road trip to Seattle, Washington. My jeep was voted over my friend's Volvo S60, 02 Taurus and (a no brainer to me), a Ford Explorer. With the amount of mileage I will put on, I have no doubts I will hit 100,000 miles on it. It drives better today than when I got it back in June 2003. It has a rebuilt tranny, installed by the original onwer at 40,000. It has towing package, including aux. tranny cooler. You can look at my cardomain site for modifications that I have done to it.

Wow...I wish I had it that easy growing up.
My first car was an '82 Chevy Caprice, which soon became my work car when I picked up a job delivering pizza. Talk about pressure! Keeping a 300K mile car running no matter what the situation knowing I would lose my job if this car failed to start in the morning!

BTW this Chevy of mine ran like a dream even though it looked like it had just come out of a solvent tank.

The 94 Jeep was a hand-me-down. The insurance gave us more than its worth after the accident. The Jeep I drive now cost $5000, leaving lots of $$ left over. I do know that I have had it easy and am fortunate for everything I own. I pay for everything right now (minus school.... gotta love scholarships)

People eat pizza in the morning ?

well cold, after the night before maybe, but I've never had one delivered in the morning.

Back on thread, my brother inlaw and his wife blew up their car through lack of maintenance a year ago, and were stuck in a pool full of alligators (i.e. no car no job).

I sold (well that's not quite correct, as it implies a transer of funds to compensate for goods) them my beater J-car wagon to get them from a bind.

Came with a long string of instructions WRT next service et....plus that the next service was free/gratis, as I had the oil, filters and plugs on hand.

Anyone want to surmise how long a J-Car will run on Pennzoil HD-30 ?

(bear in mind that it was a summer ago that I put the oil in, and it moved to Sydney where they never get a frost)

I guess we are getting away from just ranting on teenagers so here I go.

My brother turns up at my place to borrow the ATF funnel whenever his transmission starts slipping.

Despite much prodding my brother is always surprised to find that cars need oil added on the second day of a road trip.

When I change the oil in my parents car I can always fit the old oil into a 4 litre jug with room to spare despite it taking 5 litres to fill the engine.

And now for me, I check my oil like once every 5 000 km. It's always just a bit below low at this point and I don't always top it up right away. What's the matter with me!? ahahahahaha

One more...

How many people have heard the story, "I didn't know for sure if it needed 2 stroke oil added so I didn't bother putting any in."

The pizza shop opened at 10am. Since I usually got off work around 8 or so and didn't go to bed until about 1, 10am was "early" morning to me.

It sounds like she has you trained nicely.

(My wife has me well trained when it comes to vehicle maintenance.)

When I was 16 my brother (15 years older than me) grabbed me by the ear and said "You're going to work at my service station". Probably the best thing that happened to me. Taught me a lot about responsibility, dealing with people and of course vehicle maintenance. Lot of good lessons there.

I was a good kid I guess. I checked my coolant and oil every morning.

I changed my oil and filter every 2500 miles and not 1 mile over.

Although I was using Valvoline 10w-40 and Fram filters.
