Mazda dealer threatens to void my CX-5 warranty if I don't let them change my oil every 6 months...

I wanted to share my experience with my 2023 Mazda CX-5 NA and get some feedback from the community. In Spring 2023, I purchased the car about four hours away from my home because my local Mazda dealership was charging ~ $3,500 markup on the same model/trim—something I wasn’t willing to pay.

Mazda provided a year of free maintenance, which included oil changes and tire rotations, but there was a catch: the service needed to be used within the year or it would be forfeited. Since I don’t drive a lot, I ended up getting my first oil change at my local dealer in November 2023, right under 1,000 miles. The second oil change took place in May 2024, just before the free maintenance period expired, with the car only having accumulated around 2,500 miles.

Now, it’s been six months since my last oil change, and the dealership is reaching out, implying that if I don’t change my oil every six months, my warranty might be at risk. This seems absurd to me, considering I’ve only driven about 1,500 miles on the current oil. I know this is just a scare tactic to get me to spend $163 every six months.

Additionally, my dealer never told me what brand of oil they were using other than it being 0w20. Regardless, I tried telling them once that I feel confident changing oil annually, just like I did on my previous car (Infiniti Q50) considering my little driving, and the salesman almost screamed at me for saying this. Very toxic place, I must say.

I also wanted to ask how many of you are sending your used oil for analysis at every oil change? It seems like a waste of money to do this every time, but I don't mind doing it once a year if it saves me in the court. The dealer made it clear—if I don’t change my oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first), then I might as well forget about coming to them for any warranty work.

So, I wanted to ask:

1. Do you do your own maintenance on your Mazda? If so, have you run into any issues with your dealer because of it?
2. How often do you change your oil if you don’t drive a lot?

I’m looking forward to hearing your experiences and opinions!

I do my own oil changes, cabin filter and air filter. They have never said a word about it. If its convenient my suggestion is your need a new dealer. My full synthetic oil change cost me $30 the dealer syn change cost $130 now has dropped to $105.

Not a Mazda owner, but have a 2023 Acura. I do my own oil, and its done twice per year as the Queen barely puts 5k a yr on the odometer. We got a free service voucher upon purchase. But the service light has to be on or they won't do it. 🙄

As for the dealer, I don't think they can cancel mfg's warranty. I would contact Mazda directly as well as your state AG.

You might point out that the Mazda owners manual says you only need to change it every 12 months or 7500 miles and that you are in the middle of composing a letter to your state Attorney General about the predatory business practices of their company.

Whatever you do, document every oil change. Receipts, photos showing the receipt next to the odometer, etc.

Did the service advisor or service manager tell you this?

They can’t void your warranty because you or anyone else services your vehicle.
Also you can have warranty work done at any Mazda dealer. I’d call the General Manager and tell them they’ve lost your business for future purchases.

Mazda provided the year of free Maintenance, or was it the Dealer?
The manufacturer won't kill your warranty. But if the dealership provides the service and states every six months for free oil changes, then I would oblige them.

Or you could ask them for a document that shows / states the denial after six months of non-service.

First tell them you're willing to do that but only if you can get paperwork that says they will void your warranty if you don't go to only their dealership. After that call corporate about a dealer telling you they will voiding your warranty for not going to only their dealers for oil changes.

What does the owners manual state for oil change intervals?

Important question: how long is the warranty?

This sounds like the kinda place that would cheap out in doing any real work anyways. They just want your money…..

Mazda USA provides 2 free services, which comes with 2 oil changes and 2 tire rotations. I cannot find anywhere that I absolutely have to pay visits to any dealer, not just my local one for me to maintain warranty...

I change about every 6-months. Last couple of years that's about 2,500 miles.
