Mazda dealer threatens to void my CX-5 warranty if I don't let them change my oil every 6 months...

What about Schedule 2 for Severe Service? If you can say that the severe conditions as laid out in the manual do not apply, then the annual oil change should be ok.

I am not sure that I would waste more time at that dealership service dept though.

Isn't that the point of Service Interval set to Flexible? Isn't that when Mazda's Algorithm selects the correct service interval?

This idea of “voiding your warranty” is a pet peeve. There really is no such thing. Now, they very much CAN deny providing a repair under warranty, if they can establish that your actions, rather than a covered defect, led to the repair. Example: let’s say you never change your oil, and, predictably, your engine blows up, doing so within the time and mileage limits of the wty. They will, very understandably deny you coverage. Court? You’ll justly lose that case every time. Then, after you’ve bought your new engine, a seat track breaks, still within the wty time and miles. You still get that repaired under the terms of the wty. In other words, it’s NOT totally void because of the neglect of the engine. Moral of story: don’t be stupid with taking care of your car. And if you do PM yourself, DOCUMENT it and keep receipts for parts and supplies.

They definitely won't be dumb enough to provide anything in writing.

Rather, ask them to cite the specific passages that support their claims in the warranty fine print. No different than how the court must CITE a statute to prove you broke the law.

You'll get crickets and probably word salads.......

Is it possible the dealer is referring to one of those “lifetime” warranty dealer offers with the stipulation you follow their schedule and not miss any time or mileage to keep in tact?

Obviously the manufacturer warranty remains if you follow that.

That was my thought.

They offer some "lifetime" or 200k mile warranty over and above the factory warranty and it's only good if you service it with them.

Just speculation, so take such ideas for what they are, speculation.

Dealers will say or do anything to generate revenue. Follow the owners manual and document it 100%. Of course, they will fight any warranty claim, but they would have anyway. There hardly worth the digital paper there not written on anymore.

You can complain to the OEM but they don't care either. They only care about moving metal off the lot.

Crooked bunch that deserve each other. I would rather just buy a disposable BYD and forgo any warranty but they lobby their protectors to make sure I can not.

The dealer made it clear—if I don’t change my oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first), then I might as well forget about coming to them for any warranty work.

Tell them to put that in writing for you. Then watch them dance around it.

Other than that, don’t even talk to them or tell them what you’re going to do. Why do you feel you need to justify your maintenance plan to them? The more you tell them, the more ammo they will have to use against you in case you need warranty work.

Just change your own oil, document it and don’t worry about it. Chances are the idiot you talked to may not even work there for long, so no one will know your conversation with him.

It's questionable how it works exactly. When I went for my last oil change, they reset the maintenance reminder to 7,500 miles/6 months. I drove roughly 1,500 since that change and the next service reminder shows in 2,000 miles. How exactly they calculated that is beyond my mind. I drive like a grandma twice a week; that oil still looks brand new and hardly smells like gas. And besides calling me with their stupid reminders, I now get notifications in myMazda app, that I don't even use anyway. I suspect this has to do with their "connected services", which I am thinking about turning off because I don't know what exactly is being collected and how that data is used. This is what they are saying about it but I don't trust any of it:

AUTOMATIC COLLECTION, USE, AND SHARING OF DEFAULT DATA

What Default Data We Collect

All of our Connected Vehicles contain an in-vehicle Telematics Control Unit (TCU), which is activated on or before the Connected Vehicle’s delivery to a Mazda Dealer, and allows us to collect and transmit certain Default Data from the Connected Vehicle. The Default Data is generated within the Connected Vehicle, collected by either the TCU or other in-vehicle system (excluding the Electronic Data Recorder (EDR)), and transmitted to us via the TCU.

WE AUTOMATICALLY COLLECT CERTAIN DEFAULT DATA FROM THE CONNECTED VEHICLE ON AN ONGOING BASIS. ONLY WE CAN DEACTIVATE THE TCU AND DISABLE OUR COLLECTION OF ALL DEFAULT DATA. NOTE THAT THE SALE, TRANSFER, OR LEASE TERMINATION OF A CONNECTED VEHICLE WILL NOT DISABLE AUTOMATIC DEFAULT DATA COLLECTION.

“Default Data” includes the following:

  • “Driving Data”: driving behavior data, which includes the acceleration and speed at which your Connected Vehicle is driven and use of the steering and braking functions in your Connected Vehicle (Driving Data is collected for each driving trip and transmitted at each Ignition Off); and

  • “Vehicle Health Data”: includes Vehicle Identification Number (VIN); odometer, fuel level, and oil life readings; Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs); and data from the Connected Vehicle’s OBD system (“OBD Data”). OBD Data includes, but is not limited to, engine coolant temperature, fuel injection volume, engine Rotation Per Minute (RPM), and the status of doors, hood, trunk, and hazard lights (Vehicle Health Data is transmitted at each Ignition-Off).

Note: Model Year 2019 – 2021 Mazda3 and Model Year 2020 – 2021 CX-30 vehicles collect geo-location coordinates of the Connected Vehicle’s latitude and longitude each time the Connected Vehicle is turned off as Default Data.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISABLE OUR COLLECTION OF DEFAULT DATA FROM YOUR CONNECTED VEHICLE REGARDLESS OF MODEL YEAR, PLEASE CONTACT OUR CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER AT 1-800-222-5500. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING CONTACTING US IS AVAILABLE HERE.

How We Use and Share Default Data

We share the Default Data with you; our parent company, Mazda Motor Corporation, and our affiliates (collectively, the “Mazda Family of Companies”); and/or our third-party service providers for the purposes listed below. Without your prior consent, we do not let our third-party service providers use Default Data of your vehicle for their own commercial business purposes. Default Data is used for the following business purposes:

  • analysis of safety concerns and issuance of product recalls;
  • analysis of product trends;
  • product quality analysis;
  • product research and development;
  • product improvements, for safety reasons or otherwise; and
  • providing you with Mazda Connected Services, functionality updates or repair services, if applicable.

Additionally, for legal, educational or safety reasons we may share the Default Data as follows:

  • with law enforcement, courts, administrative bodies, or governments (“Enforcement Entities”) as may be required by applicable law; by legal process; in response to government investigations; for national security purposes; or where we have a good faith belief that disclosure of the Default Data is required by law or legal process. We may also share the Default Data with Enforcement Entities where we have a good faith belief it is necessary to do so to prevent harm, injury, or loss, and we may use the Default Data as reasonably necessary to pursue or defend legal actions; and

  • with third parties (e.g. consumer research groups or academic institutions) for educational or research purposes in an anonymized and aggregated format.

Bad dealership. My extended warranty covered engine @80k-ish miles replaced this summer with a new long block. I had nothing but sporadic receipts showing my 5k oil/filter/general maintenance and everything was covered.

I'd find a new dealership but I would also get what the current one is saying in paper for proof so you can bring it to corporate.

I will say though, it was a PITA getting the information from the extended [aftermarket] warranty from the purchasing dealership to the dealership that did the engine swap though.

$163 for an oil change?

The way I would look at it the law doesn't matter--I don't believe they can void the warranty by law.

The question now becomes, will they do such a thing, as they can. If the answer is yes, they will, then it might be easier to cave in. But I have to wonder why they would do that. I've had friends with VW that were threatened and dealer followed through.

Legally they cannot void your warranty if you change your own oil using oil / filters that meet or exceed Mazda's standards.

Just be sure and document (save all purch receipts) all your oil changes in case there is a court case and in that unlikely event you will prevail.

They just want your money…..

That's the bottom line to their shenanigans right there... they just trying to make mo money!

Well, it's about $120 ish. The rest was for tire rotation, which I didn't need due to little mileage but since it was included, I got their ass to do it anyway. Good thing was that I didn't pay out of my pocket for those two services. When I was there last time, I wanted to buy a couple of oil filters just so I have them readily available but they wanted $18 for each + 4% fee for paying with a credit card. I walked away. Hopefully I won't ever have to come back.
