7-11 Gas

I agree, gas is just a commodity, the rest is just marketing.

Buy who moves the most fuel!

Around here it is Delta Sonic, they have brand new stores, new pumps, and lines out the door because they have the lowest prices (usually by 1 penny) in town.

Unfortunately, there are too many variables involved in doing any of these tests. For example, temperature, humidity etc. Anybody who is not able to feel the different response in the engine at colder and humid temperature does not have finely tuned seat of pants :-)

Here in West Texas all of the 7-11's sell FINA brand. It comes from the refinery in Big Spring, Texas. Most places are high volume and equally priced. Never had an issue with it.

I filled up with 7-11 gas again yesterday. My truck is still running very well with it, still seems to run a bit faster and is a little quicker to accelerate from a stop than it did with Shell. My MPG was down about 1.5 though. That might be because I took a 120 mile round trip yesterday and we had a really strong 30 to 40 MPH headwind the whole time.

I'll keep using 7-11 for a few more tanks and see how it goes. All the Citgo stations here are being converted over to Marathon gas and there is one the same distance or a bit closer to my house as the 7-11. I will give them a month or so to completely get all the Citgo gas out of their tanks and pump plumbing and I may try it some time soon. They are the same price as 7-11. I need to research the quality of Marathon gas before I will use it though. There are a lot of Marathon stations down in Tampa. I have not heard of any problems with it yet.

Hey Jimmy9190,

Based on your excellent results concerning 7-11 gas, I fill up two times already at my local 7-11 station which is about 1.5 miles away from home. The pump says that the fuel is "oxygenated to reduce carbon monoxide and pollutants from the emission system." It also said "contains up to 10% of enthanol." So far, my 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT run smoother and perform better than with all the top-tier fuels I use in my area. For the Dallas-Fort Worth market, 7-11 fuels come from Maverick Oil Company in Houston, Texas. I am confident your fuel comes from the same location as well for the Florida area.

I hope the 7-11 gas does come from the Maverick refinery. I guess there is never any way to really know for sure where it comes from but it feels good knowing I may very well be supporting an American refinery that employs American workers and does not use or purchase crude oil from the Middle East.

My truck is still running great with the 7-11 gas. I have filled up there 4 times now and gotten 18.2, 17.3, 16.4 and I filled up today and my MPG was 18.8. The 16.4 MPG is not really a true representative MPG figure, because I took a 120 mile round trip in some very strong headwinds during that tank. I am very satisfied with the 18.8 MPG result from this most recent tank of 7-11 gas.

I am going to continue using the 7-11 gas and tracking my MPG. I am very impressed and completely satisfied with both the power increase and MPG I am getting with 7-11 gas. The power increase is not really all that dramatic, but it definitely is an increase I can feel when I drive my truck.

I noticed last week that the truck that went to the two 7-11 stations by my house was actually a 7-11 trailer. I couldn't read the sign on the cab to see who was hauling it. I thought it was different that the tanker was actually painted and labeled 7-11.

I haven't seen any 7-11 branded fuel tankers here in Florida, but I do know 7-11 has its own proprietary brand and formulation of gas. The articles I read online about 7-11 ending their business relationship with Citgo also had info on how 7-11 worked with three American oil refineries: Tower Energy Group of Torrence, California; Sinclair Oil of Salt Lake City and Frontier Oil of Houston for supplies to be marketed as 7-Eleven-brand gasoline.

I am very glad that 7-11 is working with the refineries here at home in the USA to produce, transport and sell its own 7-11 blend and brand of gas. So far, the gas I have bought there has provided very good power and MPG.

I stick to one brand. that is chevron.

And I never go to chevron. None of my money to Hugo Chavez.

I only know of a couple 7-11s, seems most from past years are something else now. The Chevron I mostly use, I use to gas up on my way to work. The 7-11 across the street always looks dark because they don't turn on the lights at the pumps overhang. Its so dark over there it looks closed. I notice the price is 10c a gallon cheaper though. I checked the price yesterday, actually for the first time. Never paid any attention to the 7-11 price before.
So the Chevron I use is well lighted, the 7-11 looks like a great place to get robbed in the dark. The Chevron has a McD's connected to it also - and its on my side of the road so I can get on my way.
I rather get gas on my way to work, never after work on my way home.
So there isn't many 7-11's around like there used to be - here where I'm at anyways.

I saw a tanker truck this morning at my 7-11. It did not have any logos or brand names on it at all. It was just a plain silver fuel tanker trailer, and a plain single cab diesel truck pulling it. There were no logos or markings on the truck cab either. It doesn't really matter to me, as long as I keep getting good performance from the 7-11 gas I will keep using it.

It's too bad about the 7-11 in your area. There are a ton of 7-11 stores here. Their prices are usually cheaper than the name brand stations by 5 or 6 cents, The 7-11 near my house is lit up like an airport runway at night.

I noticed recently that our local Mobil station's "Mobil On The Run" convenience store is now a 7-Eleven. After doing a search, I found out why:

7-Eleven to Buy 183 Exxon Mobil Properties to Expand in Florida

Quote:
7-Eleven plans to spend $250,000 to $500,000 a store to remodel the Exxon locations in Florida during the next two years, Duffy said. Most will be switched to 7-Eleven signs and interior displays, taking advantage of the company’s marketing and distribution for its 610 Florida stores, he said. All will keep selling Mobil gasoline and let customers use the ExxonMobil credit card.

Usually its the owner/operator of the station who determines the quality of the fuel, rather than the banner on the marquis

In my region, there are some stations you don't go to, because they don't maintain their tanks well, and they've been known to get water in the tanks. That said, there's an extremely well maintained Marathon station by us, and my fuel mileage is excellent with every fill up. The motors always run smooth. BP's fuel has been pretty good, but it varies from station to station. one station the pumps run SLOW SLOW because they don't change the filters often enough. (Station manager)

Back some years ago, we had a station a few cities away that sold Alcohol free gas... that was THE BEST running stuff.

I am also very impressed with the Marathon stations here locally and I get very good MPG and engine performance and a smooth idle with Marathon gas. Sometimes their prices are a few cents higher, but this past Saturday they were 2 cents cheaper per gallon on regular 87 than the 7-11 just down the street. Marathon is based in Findlay, Ohio and I have read that they do not use any oil from the Middle East or South America. They say they refine oil from the USA, Mexico and Canada. I guess either brand will work but I would rather not support Exxon-Mobil.

Right on man... Our Marathon next door is spot on or a touch less than BP, or Pilot.. The only cheap one around here is Valero.. No thanks.

Our Indie owned Marahon makes plus the same price as reg on Tuesdays.. Rock on!

I tested my local 7-11 and Shell station gas this Saturday, Jul 2, 2011, on both of their premium (93 octane) gas for ethanol. Results: 7/11 was 2% ethanol, Shell was 5%. Both pumps had a sticker that said "contains 10% ethanol". A couple weeks ago I tested the local Costco premium gas and got 5% as well. Just about always, the prices have been Shell the highest, Costco the cheapest.

Just so everyone knows there was a big meeting of all the big bulk gas plants in NA they came away with a deal that everyone was supposed to make an equivalent product and if this worked they would ink a deal that where ever the closest refinery was that is where everyone would get the fuel from. In other words all the gas stations should be running the same gas unless there were several refineries in the same area then its your own product. Well they inked the deal and thats how it works now. Thats what I was told by an industry insider. I have never read anything of the sort this is just second hand knowledge from a Chemical engineer that is in charge of a very large facility in Canada. It was supposed to save transporting costs for all parties involved.

I think I got some bad gas from Marathon not long ago. It made my truck run like a sick chicken. I ran it down to half a tank and re-filled with 7-11 gas. My truck ran a lot better after I did that, I think the 7-11 gas diluted out the Marathon gas. I ran that tank down as low as I safely could and refilled with 7-11, and my truck is still running fine now. I think I will avoid Marathon for a while.

Soot4Brains, welcome to BITOG!

You're fortunate to have lower ethanol levels in your area. In my area, it isn't unusual to have somewhat higher levels than 10%.
