First, a thank you to bitogers for links to LSJR and comments about shell in florida and did the manganese come from quick trip gas and responses.

I’ve used redline gas additive for decades in the maintainence dose of one ounce to ten gallons. Currently have been doing that in a 2023 base forester (12.3 compression ratio) and a 2023 sport ridgeline. Last year filled up the ridgeline with Exxon premium on the way back from OK. Within miles I noticed increased performance. I then started buying Quik Trip premium and still using redline. Switched to the same premium and redline in the forester as well as now on the second oil change with Valvoline Restore and Protect. Based on all the gas info noted above, I switched to Shell premium. (Fifty years ago my coworkers would’ve thought me crazy) The switch to Shell produced a surprising benefit yesterday on a day trip to OK. Better half agrees the price differential was worth it.

I've been the one trying to figure out the source of Manganese in the Used Oil Analysis (UOA) results from the 2025 Pilot's J35Y8 engine. After a lot of research, it appears Honda may be using Manganese/bronze valve guides in this J35Y8 engine.

I just changed the oil and filter after only 3k miles using only Shell premium, and there was minimal carbon, unlike the previous oil change interval of 5.6k miles using Quik Trip 87 octane. I'm going to experiment with using Shell 87 octane and adding Amsoil Upper Cylinder Lubricant this go-round, but if after a couple of tanks of 87, may have to switch back to premium. I also am using only Sport or Tow drive modes, as I've verified these two drive modes prevent VCM from activating.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with the different brands/octanes.

I use Kroger's premium 93 in my XT4 with (sometimes) Lucas Fuel Treatment and Techron Complete Fuel System Cleaner (as per GM service manual) every 10,000 miles for the direct injection since it's not Top Tier fuel. It's been good so far.

Going out to dinner with the missus and having to wear dress shoes and the gas pedal feel will do that.
Do you notice the brakes work better when she is in there also?

First an apology again because I posted too soon. And because I didn’t reply to various other threads. I did remember your post and I believe tom in nj or one of the other regulars replied to you about manganese. Redline I believe mentions a lubricant in their gas additive. Redline slso stated pea survives combustion and could come back through and keep the egr pcv clean.

I was using rug from shell, Exxon Mobil, and chevron texaco. Switching to premium from quik trip for price did provide more performance. I asked the Honda service writer, who has a wrx, to drive my ridgeline if my Cooper R T had degraded the ride. His asked what did I do to the nine speed zf because it shifted so well. Premium gas with maintenance dose of redline and that was even before the switch to shell.

I did not edit my post made in haste. I was in Houston fifty years ago and they said don’t buy shell gas. And the forester was the vehicle yesterday. I use to see low twenties on rug. Today even with a lot of errands the display it is showing thirty one plus mpg less two for the error or twenty nine plus. And lastly my moniker that I first used years ago on a liberty crd forum is now appropriate and later this year I’ll be an octogenarian if better half lets me.
An old joke a jeepster told me-why do married men die first.
Because they want too

Call me dumb, but I am missing the point here.
No, just being rude.

If you don't have something remotely useful to add to this thread, instead of feeling compelled to make a snide remark, please keep it to yourself.

Maybe you'd feel better starting a new thread discussing how other forum members post things compelling you to post snide replies. Perhaps you should create that post in the Humor section, as it appears you think you're being funny.

Dang how old are you? And still driving.... and worrying about stuff that doesn't matter..?

Its been a long road eh.

EDIT: Just realized op's username. Classic BITOG.
If something doesn't matter to you, it shouldn't matter to others? Like the others making rude, snide, or non-helpful comments, why not just move along?

Was the point of the rant to show that you could be worse than the ones you are calling out? If so 👍👍. Yeah, I know I'm doing it too 😁

I think fuel is very important; Exxon/Shell/Chevron is all I use.
Then one of the PEA’s before an oil change …

But noticed what?
Re-read OP. Says it right there.

Octane and top tier status “doesn’t matter”? Where did you dig up this conclusion?

Cars with modern DI tend to adjust their timing dynamically and as such do often benefit from higher octane fuel. They may not require it, but they do run more advanced timing with it.

And if you think top tier fuel doesn’t matter then I feel bad for your piston rings.

I use V power nitro in my Accord and I find myself frequently explaining that it's for the detergency, not octane, that I'm choosing what is in my area the most expensive fuel (and not super convenient to get).

I've also added my local Exxon with "synergy" to the "good guy" list.

I'm sure the car would be OK on cheap stuff, but it seems to me inconsistent to use HPL oil and burn cheap fuel.

And on a personal note, I've have made a point to lecture many customers on the downside of cheap fuel that I just can't ignore my own advice without rank hypocrisy. So *of course* a fuel system engineer is using premium fuel.
