Are Shell/Exxon better than other Top Tier gasolines?

Thinking I'd save a few bucks each fill-up, this past OCI, I switched from using Shell premium to 87 octane Top Tier fuel from Quik Trip in the new Honda, supplemented using Redline SI-1. When I changed the oil and filter, there was a lot of carbon in the filter, and when I got the used oil analysis results back from Speediagnostix, LSJR asked "Are you using 87 octane fuel?".

The only thing having changed during the last OCI and the one before was changing the fuel source and type. I've gone back to Shell Premium and will see how the filter and used oil analysis look next oil change.
Why do you think he suspected 87 octane?

I asked him why he asked and sent him a picture of the filter media. FYI, the Manganese was 18ppm over 5.6k miles OCI. This was his response.

"Yes, non-TopTier and lower octane fuel can contribute to the higher Manganese and Carbon levels.

Using TopTier 93 for a fuel oil change interval would be a great way to see if that would reduce the carbon and Manganese."

Not definitive by any means, but very informative:

The article's a good read. Thank you for sharing it.

I don't think it will be a surprise to anyone that paying for premium gas at Shell, XOM, or BP gets you more additives. Then again, misinformation abounds.

"This compares Synergy Supreme+ to Synergy regular, not to competitors. It confirms that Exxon reserves its highest detergent concentrations for its most expensive product."

Why did you make 2 changes?? Not a good experiment.
Unless your Honda requires premium, you're wasting money.

Local to me, a station changed from Sunoco to Marathon. Even though it's the cheapest around, I find my vehicles don't run as crisp on it than Shell. Both are Top Tier.
So now I'm paying 15 cents more a gallon or more for Shell.

Id like to try Exxon regularly but none close.

Shell Exxon and Chevron are definitely my personal favorites to fill up the Cadillac with 93. BP, Citgo second choice in a pinch. Everything else lives on 87 which is usually just QT around here for convenience.

Youde have to read company websites, what octanes offer what
Phillips 66 3.5 minimum epa requirement.
Shell has 2 times in 87,89 but 93 is 5 times.
Mobil gas synergy ...only in the premium 93 octane..87,88 is twice detergent I think
Citgo uses nitrogen triclean
93 ,of these have highest detergents. But at $3.99 gallon..it's costly just make it 200 miles tank.
