2024 Landcruiser

So true. Toyota does things "their way" and their definition of modern can be a bit outta touch.
But that's there thing and many folks love it. I had a '92 Truck so a HiLux. Great but spartan. 22RE 5spd super bullet proof. I just can't get into vehicles that are $50K without basic things my $20K VW has just to say "reliable"...there's more to vehicle ownership.

We don't need to see...smaller turbo 4s have been a mainstay for the last 10 or so years. Look at the ea888.3 2.0 in the VWs....Atlas has them and now the only option (gen 4)...3.6 na VR6 is gone. Gen 3 had no significant issues.
They are, but Toyota does not shine in that department. They had such flops in Europe that it is astonishing. There is a reason why they buy BMW engines, and why 2.4T has a lot of very similar if not the same solutions as the BMW B48 engine.
The Tundra/Sequoia issues prove that they really lag in downsizing. A consequence of resistance and selling dinosaurs for a long time. When they did not have ANY other option but to go turbo, they, of course, are having infant problems.
2.4 seem much better than V6TT, so we will see.
Another issue is packaging and generally astonishing attempts to save money. Tundra/Sequoia are plagued by quality issues when it comes to assembly. The rear suspension is not designed for any other purpose but to save money. If they went independent suspension, they would have more space to pack the battery. So, I am having a hard time seeing how 4Runner and Land Cruiser live next to each other considering that this LC is really a 4Runner. I initially likeed the idea, but the more I look the more does not make sense.
I do agree that people need to move on.

The round headlights are only for first edition models which are limited to 3000 world wide I think. Was reading about it a couple of days ago.

I do think this Land Cruiser looks more appealing than the last. UK is only getting a 2.8 291hp diesel at first.
Should say 201 hp!

Toyota's corporate philosophy for the future is basically focusing on hybrid drivetrains rather than full electrification. From a reliability standpoint I have no issues with the turbo, but the hybrid system does add alot of extra complexity. They do use a 1.8 kwh Ni-MH battery which should be more robust than lithium ion. However, as it degrades with time, do you just slowly loose the starting torque boost?

The next gen 4Runner will have the turbo 4, but with the hybrid system as option. That may be more ideal from a reliability standpoint. I'd be curious if we compared this next gen 4Runner vs Land Cruiser... what exactly makes the Land Cruiser more reliable? Especially if the engine and drivetrain are similar, more complexity usually is worse for reliability.

The FJ80 was handsome. Its been a spiral of worse and worse looks since then.

I think I coukd put Toyota badging on a bronco and make it look about like that.

I was excited when I saw this thread. The truck to me is a let down in looks, but that’s the the trend with Toyota since around y2k unfortunately.
I drove a 84 Land Cruiser in high school and parents purchased an 89 Pickup 4x4. Both were very reliable but rusted and rode like garbage at best. Yes both amazing off road.

Its commendable that you are a VW fan. VW's track record for the last 10 years has also been somewhat abmysal in the US. There are probably very few knowledgeable people cross shopping between a VW and a Toyota however, let alone a people mover Atlas vs a body on frame full time 4WD SUV.

Imagine waiting 10 years to buy a vehicle you want. It's what the warranty is for.
I dunno, I dislike going to the dealer. Dealerships have been known to screw up warranty work. Plus it could break just outside of warranty. And then there is the aspect of sitting around the dealer, or having to get a rental in the meantime.

All cars are a gamble, new or used, and even going from one OEM to the next. But how much does one want to gamble? It's a different story when one has multiple vehicles and can limit miles on any given vehicle, IMO. When it's your daily and you need it on a daily basis, one tends to get a bit more concerned.

That's my point, folks worry so much about things, they all have a level of "gamble" and with Toyota, I'm sure it's lower. Buy what you want is my thinking instead of worrying about/speculating about reliability without any data. I can't imagine thinking this Toyota would be a reliability issue w/r to being a daily vehicle.
