2008 Ford edge 150,000 miles, original engine just started burning oil

Thin oil makes engines sound bad, nothing new. The 2.4 mitsubishi outlander hates 20 grade even though it doesn't burn it but it sounds awful with it. Switched to euro 30 and 40 and she runs like a rolls and sneaks up on me going up the driveway to where i only hear the door closing when i could hear it buzz up the driveway with 20. Saw the same effect on my v8's but to a lesser degree but still notable. The misfiring and stalling is a whole other thing. Maybe the oil cleaned something in the PCV?
They kept bothering me about the free maintenance....sorry I did...
Took out my Quaker State Ultimate Protection 5w30 and put in their 0w-20 and the smoothness-quiet was replaced with racket....

No more free maintenance

If it has worked that quickly, you might want to change the filter. When Valvoline Restore and Protect works slowly on hard carbon deposits, it supposedly (per Valvoline) dissolves carbon into the oil.

If it has worked quickly as in your case, it may have dislodged softer carbon. Lot's of people have found carbon particles in the pleats.

If you change your filter, and the old one is a Motorcraft, when you cut it open you may get an additional surprise beyond carbon in the pleats.
Thanks, I was wondering about that. I'll change it this week.

Does anyone change out filter around 2000 miles and leave oil in I thought about it but then was always to lazy to do it

I don't think it's necessary. Some people do, but on very high mileage and sludged engines. I was thinking to do it on my first oil change with Valvoline Restore and Protect but probably won't do it.

If it was that important or crucial - Valvoline would have mentioned it as part of the cleaning procedure.

It has always had MotoCraft semi syn
5w-20 since day one. 6 months or 5k intervals, very stricktly.
How much oil your Ford burns for 3K or 5K miles?
Make sure you don't have any gasket/seal leaks (valve cover gasket, rear main seal, so you can track your oil consumption easier.

It was burning 1 qt per thousand miles. It has no leaks, my regular mechanic just checked. I could smell the burnt oil.

Been about 600 miles since I put in the restore and protect, no burnt oil smell, no misfire, no stalling while parking, it is significantly quieter, it's running like a dream I can't believe it.

I'm changing the filter at 1000 per someone's suggestion here. Leaving the R&P in the engine and topping off.

I did check the oil at 500 miles and I couldn't tell if it burnt any. I took that as good for now.

Most of what you are experiencing is most likely just due to going up a grade from a 20 weight to a 30 weight.

Changing the filter that early is most likely a waste of money. It doesn’t clean fast enough to warrant that.

Not necessarily. We've seen some pretty loaded filters here. Maybe overkill but not a bad idea to get a sense of how much is coming out of your engine.

I just started using VRP and have the same dilemma - should I inspect the filter at 2.5K (half way through 5K OCI) or just don't bother.

My car is at 172K and burns about a quart per 5K miles.
However, the OP truck burns the same amount for 1K miles.

@tired No, three changes same filter for all three as mentioned in my post. Engine had over 200k of unknown maintenance.
You're right. I did miss that it was three changes. But this was VRP in a neglected, oil burning engine?

Edit: I see you just posted that it was burning oil. Did you run VRP?

Congrats on finding Restore and Protect. Change precisely at 5k miles. Use a quality oil filter like Mobil1 EP or MicroGard Select. Good luck.

Two different applications. One burning oil, ran the filter for two changes (10k total). The other one 15k on the filter with three changes - uses some oil but not much.

Both were Valvoline Restore and Protect oil.

Thanks for sharing your experience. A very helpful data point on filter loading. Apologies I misunderstood you initially. I couldn't keep track of what you were using in the past. I remember you are running AMSOIL HM in at least one vehicle.

Did you cut them open to confirm they weren't loaded? Or are they cartridge filters so easy to inspect?

@tired All good. Yes one was a cartridge filter (I have since sold that vehicle) and the other I cut open. Obviously some engines out there might be dirtier but I think for most people a typical 5k OCI on the same filter is perfectly fine, even for their first OCI of the oil.

Yes I am back to Amsoil now, this was all last year and the year before that.

So for like $10 bucks for a decent filter, I'll change the filter and beg forgiveness 😅. I like this car and a little overkill will be my birthday present to myself! If I followed all the conflicting advice on this thread, I wouldn't know weather to $h17 or go blind. 😆

I agree with your assessment. I think it's cheap insurance to ensure you don't go a whole OCI with a filter in bypass. After the first change, loading up subsequent filters is probably very unlikely.
