I'm having my mechanic do a compression test and whatever to determine the problem. I only drive 3 to 5 thousand miles a year. The rest is in great shape.
What is the best high mile oil? To keep it going another 50,000. Without teardown.
It has always had MotoCraft semi syn
5w-20 since day one. 6 months or 5k intervals, very stricktly.

That's most likely your issue. Stuff isn't good especially for the absurd premium it sells for. It's just crummy syn blend and it's even worse that new high output turbo gdi ford engines run this too and those roast oil harder. Switch to Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30 and give it a few runs.

What would be your brand recommendation?

I'll parrot the others w/a caveat. Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30. However, if it's seals that are leaking most of your oil then you'll certainly want to use a High Mileage oil like you mentioned. Pretty much any of the full synthetic High Mileage oils on the shelf but would say use a 30 grade at the minimum.

Okay, I was thinking a 30w would be better and I was wondering how strict the manufacturer recommended oil is, which is 5-20. So im going tomorrow and picking up the valvoline r&r in the 5-30 variety. My local Walmart has it in stock. Thanks for the input.

Valvoline states this product needs x4 oil drain intervals for it to do it's thing of cleaning up the engine. You can feel confident it's a great product for your application & continued use will get what you need accomplished. Thanks for letting us know what you've decided.

That’s what they have been saying all along but then again their most recent video showed a significant amount of cleanup after running Valvoline Restore and Protect for just one run of about 150-200 hours. And that was in engines with 500,000 miles on them too.

That being said, a lot of us didn’t see the oil consumption come down as much after one interval. It took 2 or 3 more to get the best results.

Right, I think it's all going to depend on the vehicle application on how long it takes. Think x4 may take the average fleet age into account that's on the road. It was interesting to see how it performed when they ran it again. I wouldn't want to say any less intervals since that may not set reasonable expectations you know. Thanks for your reply. (y)

Hey, great. I picked up the oil and plan to use from now on. Would a drain and fill every 1000 miles speed up the performance or not. I only drive 4 to 5 thousand a year.

Run Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30. Just run it forever. It should clean up your rings.

No. Just run it for 5000 miles. Since you got on top of this as soon as it happened, you have a good chance at fixing this.

A lot of short trips can really gum up your piston rings.......
Time for a good clean

I have an edge to watch for water pump issues. The internal water pump is chain driven. The water pump has coolant on 1 side and oil other. Its problematic and if it leaks the coolant will get into oil. They usually go around this mileage factor in if u have big repairs with oil burning issue might be time to get rid of it.

The transverse mounted 3.5 and 3.7 in flex, explorer, edge and Lincoln’s have this issue

Am I crazy? I put the Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 into the Edge-- immediately the engine was half as noisy. It was misfiring a fair amount around 40 to 50 mph. It was stalling occasionally when I would park.

Arter 200 miles all these symptoms are ALL GONE. Am I imagining or is this stuff that good?

No you're not crazy. This is a very common report. It seems many/most find this after switching to Valvoline Restore and Protect.

I'd recommend staying with the Valvoline Restore and Protect indefinitely.
Wow! I'll keep you posted after around 1000 miles. But I am sold. I am a convert and my Edge is more than happy.

Im putting this in all 3 of my, 90,000 plus cars.

Thin oil makes engines sound bad, nothing new. The 2.4 mitsubishi outlander hates 20 grade even though it doesn't burn it but it sounds awful with it. Switched to euro 30 and 40 and she runs like a rolls and sneaks up on me going up the driveway to where i only hear the door closing when i could hear it buzz up the driveway with 20. Saw the same effect on my v8's but to a lesser degree but still notable. The misfiring and stalling is a whole other thing. Maybe the oil cleaned something in the PCV?

If it has worked that quickly, you might want to change the filter. When Valvoline Restore and Protect works slowly on hard carbon deposits, it supposedly (per Valvoline) dissolves carbon into the oil.

If it has worked quickly as in your case, it may have dislodged softer carbon. Lot's of people have found carbon particles in the pleats.

If you change your filter, and the old one is a Motorcraft, when you cut it open you may get an additional surprise beyond carbon in the pleats.
