2008 Ford edge 150,000 miles, original engine just started burning oil

@tired All good. Yes one was a cartridge filter (I have since sold that vehicle) and the other I cut open. Obviously some engines out there might be dirtier but I think for most people a typical 5k OCI on the same filter is perfectly fine, even for their first OCI of the oil.
What filter brands? Extended use models?

Two different applications. One burning oil, ran the filter for two changes (10k total). The other one 15k on the filter with three changes - uses some oil but not much.

Both were Restore and Protect oil.
I agree with your assessment. I think it's cheap insurance to ensure you don't go a whole OCI with a filter in bypass. After the first change, loading up subsequent filters is probably very unlikely.

@ZeeOSix Yes. Both were older stock Amsoil filters that I had on hand still.
It's good to point out that you did 10K miles with one filter in vehicle A, and then you did another 15K miles in vehicle B with one filter, but both those filters were extended oil intervals filters.

If somebody like me uses regular oil filter rated at like 5K miles. The oil filter results may be different. However, I'm confident my filter would be fine after 5K miles on the first run with Valvoline Restore and Protect. I may just inspect the filter half way for a pease of mind. I still don't consider my car an oil burner. :)

As promised I am reporting how things went changing to 10 30 Restore Protect. As I said it was burning 1 qt per 1000 miles.

Since changing I now have over 2000 miles on the oil. After the change the first 1000 it went from the full mark to the half mark. I didn't add any oil. After another 1000 the oil level did not change. I'm going to call this a success. Of course I'll keep checking it every 1000 to ensure things are going well.

Really glad to hear it. I'm glad you decided on it.

Where are you buying 10W-30 VRP?
