First of all, got this car given to my wife by family. Love it, it spent most of it's life in Nevada and is super clean/rust free. Runs great, very smooth ride, has 131K miles.
I have been using m1 and kn filters for a few oil changes. Done a little googling and sometimes come up with speculation that vehicle requires special PSI rating (20).
The OEM filter I can get for 6 bucks and looks very well made. But via googling I've also seen threads claiming it has an excessively high micron rating (50).
Should I keep using quality aftermarket filters with the lower psi ratings? Any thoughts?

On my 05 Sonata, the only time I used a non-OEM filter the oil light flickered at idle. Changed back to OEM, stopped flickering. So I only use OEM.

Nothing wrong with using the OE filter, which is made by Mann in Korea.

M1 is good. Wix is good. Fram Ultra is good.

But K&N isn't that great. Cheap Korean filter nowhere near as good as it used to be (it was formerly made by Fram and the same as the M1). They lowered the qualtiy but not the price.

I buy mine off ebay by the 10 pack and the cost works out to $4.50 apiece. This is one of the best made filters I know of, once you hold one in your hand you'll know what I mean.

Not aware of any particularly high bypass psi spec for the H/K OEM. Fram specs the 9688 in the 9-15 psi range which is not remarkably high. Not like some Subarus are noted for psi in the 20's. I'd say that 'speculation' might come from the much posted H/K tsb reagrding aftermarket oil filters.

As for OE micron efficiency rating, if one uses the only known information, that being the Hyundai oil filter youtube, the rating is ~99@50um. 'If' that matters to you, not high compared to many equivalent aftermarket options. But would be in line with other Asian oem filter data points.

The H/K OE does look to be well made and seems popular here. That said, based on multiple posts here on the topic, many H/K owners run aftermarket filters and are also satisfied with the results, no issues.

So OEM or reputable quality silicone adbv aftermarket filter, either should work fine.

I have used Fram Ultra- Fram Tough Guard -Bosch Distance Plus on my Elantra and the engine has not blown up yet.
I think any quality filter and synthetic oil is just fine.
I sleep well at night.

Same here.

The OEM Hyundai filter does have the 20 lb bypass setting. It's doesn't mean that much though.

Some say using some aftermarket filters would cause a tick when idling. To me using a high pressure bypass filter would aggravate that. I think the tick came from the oil draining out when Hyundai motors had the filters situated at a 90* from the side of the block back in the day.

I have the oem filter on hand and one kn hp-1004 which I bought with an oil deal recently.. I weighed them on digital food scale just for fun. OEM filter = 11.7 ounces. KN 11.0 even. That's including the full plastic wrapping and extra metal at end for wrench tightening. Yeah, I know, it proves nothing but..

Well I'm off to do an oil change.
I've used KN, M1 and Bosch in the past and never had any issues.. I'll stick with OEM for the future, since it's cheaply price and seems well built.

Can you post an authoritative link/citing to this spec. Similar to the noted OEM efficiency rating directly from the Hyundai youtube, I'd like to read it.

That aside, as noted here again many successfully use quality aftermarket filters for H/K vehicles.

I have used many different aftermarket filters on my Hyundai Elantra with no problems at all, which included cellulose, cellulose/synthetic blend, and synthetic media filters ... and I've had no trouble out of using filters with nitrile ADBVs either.

BITOG is the only place I have seen the 20 psi setting mentioned for the Hyundai OEM filter. I haven't come across it anywhere else. Anyway, Hastings #LF565 and Baldwin #B7243 (which are spec'd for my Hyundai Elantra) have a bypass setting of 20 psi, if that means anything. I have used many different oil filters with bypass valve settings/ranges lower than that. It's not something I am concerned about.

I have the KIA version of this car. Usually I run OEM, as they are great quality for the price, but I'm running a Napa platinum at the moment and I have had no issues. I'll probably go back to OEM when I am done with the NP unless I can find another quality filter that beats the OEM price.

If you've had no issues and you are comfortable with your current oil and filter combo, why change?

My curiosity was concerning the rumored psi setting and the large micron rating of the OEM. Yes,the vehicle is presently running fine and not blowing up with other filters, but would a larger micron rating allow faster engine wear? Again these are rumors, don't know if true that I got from the parts guy at Hyundai (the higher psi rating) and a Sonata forum (the higher micron rating). The parts guy sells me OEM at employee discount, he has no agenda.
Just interested and curious, it's not hindering my sleep.

"Higher micron rating". Different 'imo' than the "rumors" about higher bypass spec for which I've yet to see an authoritative reference, there is one reference point for the efficiency micron rating. The Hyundai oil filter youtube references the H/K filter efficiency at 1:33 of yt. This would put them in line with other Asian filters.

For whatever reasons the youtube media tag direct link is not working currently. If you are interested in the spec and want to see it go to youtube and enter Hyundai Genuine Parts: Oil Filter. First non sponsored entry will be the Hyundai oil filter yt.

Okay, I see it rates the filter at 99.2% at 50 microns.

^^^Yes, that's the youtube and the spec I spoke of. Because of that, call that one a tad more than the bypass spec internet hearsay.

As for link, hesitated to yt link as last time another thread got locked using non-embed as reason even though direct media tag was also not working then too.

Thanks for that info Zee. Knew there were some glitches with yt media tag lately but not a conscious change made that was affecting embed.

Does that mean it's now ok to just post the links to yt address? Or pretty much all yts, embeds or otherwise are gone?

Or maybe just on the 'down low'...QT. Shhhhh
