0w20 in Europe!

It looks like Castrol has beat Mobil 1 to market with a 0w20 synthetic. This is only available in Europe, BTW. So if this 5w20 "thing" is just a CAFE "thing," why is Castrol bringing this oil out there?

Edit: After further browsing the Castrol Switzerland web site, it seems Castrol beat Mobil to market with this oil quite awhile ago: 0w20 SLX was introduced there in 1999.

Ok, I know I'm new here but I don't undertsand why so many people are afraid of these thin oils. A lot of Mobil 1 has been sold and it's thin for a 30 weight yet seems to work pretty well.

Years ago (1981)I was involved in some studies of air cooled 4 cyl. Japanese motorcycle engines with different weights and types of oil. From what we saw the thick oils that everyone thought were required at the time did nothing more than raise the oil temperature.

We decided a high flow rate and thinner lube was the way to go...

No, I don't think so. To my knowledge, there wasn't a single 5w20 oil on the market in North America in 1999, which is when this Castrol 0w20 was introduced. Conoco was in the final development stages of Ford's 5w20 in 1999 in preparation for it becoming the factory fill for 2001 models.

Some of the Castrol Euro Automobile and all of the Racing and Motorcycle oils are right here in the USA. Cost is actually not as bad as one would think. A guy should make friends with a established Motorcycle parts resaler and then the Castrols,Motuls,Belrays,Maxums ect can be had for cheap. Carefull though as some are blends,,even Silkolene has one.
Now these will not be SL's though but maybe the Castrol Actevo is,dunno?
If any of you want to know if they are giving you a good deal or not,get their price and PM me. I will tell you how much they are making but please do not ask me to get an oil ,,I will not and cannot do this

Gman, I'm curious to see the crossover in European vehicles with 0W20 as the recommended oil. Have any examples yet? I assume more will go this direction but my old beaters are unlikely to see it anytime soon.

when it comes to efficiency improvements in autmobile mileage, every country will eventually look to 20 weight oils whether they have Cafe or similar standards or not. Improvements in MPG is big business now, more than ever. Ford and Honda are the two largest promoters of this oil, they sell vehicles in pretty much every country around the world, its just a matter of time before their recommended oils land in different markets to support their vehicles.

Europe has tons of little 1L 3 and 4 banger engines that could certainly benefit from these A1 rated oils...maybe this is their intent.

BWM now recommends both 0w-20 and 5w-20 synthetic oils meeting the BMW "Longlife" specification for most of their newer engines. The M series engines still recommend a 10w-60, although I'd run a 20w-50 synthetic if I owned one of these M series motors ....
Based on the Car and Driver article, I am not at all impressed by the 10w-60 Castrol synthetic. I think it's possible to get 5000-6000 miles to the quart in this engine with a better oil.
