World Premiere. Mazda CX-60.

i am getting a cx 70 as soon as it is released. there is a rumour floating around that there might be a twin turbo version of the inline 6. but it is only a rumour.

That would be a big change away from the SkyActiv X engine then. More of a regular SkyActiv engine.

The SkyActiv X uses a supercharger to facilitate the HCCI. ( Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition ). That is something Mazda worked on for many years and finally achieved.

I remain very excited for these. I am loving my RDX, but I do miss "Made in Japan" quality, and I think the CX70 will be the best thing in the segment (Luxury/Near Luxury/Premium CUV that's fun to drive but not going to break the bank to maintain). I am torn on PHEV and SA-X, though, but obviously know nothing about either, really, in regards to this platform as they compare to one another, so I await. One thing to keep in mind, the PHEV CX60 has 50/50 weight distribution! The Diesel version, 55/45. If it is the same as SA-X, I will definitely spring for the PHEV even if the SA-X is a hair faster, but I kindof doubt it will be.

I wonder if it will give Mazda any sales success like the CX-5 or just another small volume but decent vehicle like CX-3 and CX-9 etc. Mazda makes some decent old school vehicles but their financial success is another matter.

So, good first effort in this space for Mazda, but it falls short of the X5 45e. Also, the X5 sounds a LOT better, though I'm sure many people won't care about that.
It's still in the tuning phase, I believe?

It's $30-40K less.
It's got more power in EV mode.
It gets nearly twice the mpg in HV mode.

I really am not seeing how this is a "falls short of" just because of engine note and being somewhat slower, lol

Weight distribution and a premium placed on driving dynamics.
I know that and you know that, but I just don't see most folks these days even knowing what those phrases mean much less caring. I guess if they start autocrossing them... 😁

Most people can't tell the difference in 7 and 10 second 0-60's. But still. It matters. Because the drivers who CAN tell, will be writing reviews...

It's not as dynamic (you'll note he critiqued that), the interior isn't quite up to the same level (though as you note, the price reflects that), and it just doesn't feel as "premium". I think it's a great first effort, but his review of the X5 is a lot more glowing, if you haven't watched it.

I expect Mazda will refine and improve it, as he noted, this is the first big RWD SUV they've ever made, there is going to be a learning curve.

I didn’t get that same impression from Thomas on his review of the interior. He really appreciated the simple lines plus having buttons for essential needs instead of using a touch screen. He did point out the width of the console and how it affected his right leg.

The biggest knock was on the suspension and how the bumps were transmitted into the cabin and passenger. At one point he noted how the steering was affected by that. Would smaller tires help? That was one question but the weight of the batteries seemed to be his primary thought.

Thomas is a huge BMW fan. That should be noted. Nothing wrong with that but on occasion his bias will show. He calls Mazda the “Japanese BMW” but that might be a unfair comparison. I think Japan and Germany have different ideas on driving and handling.
