Why keep a big oil Stash?

10W40 should be used in summer. A 5W30 is a better choice for winter unless the engine is old and has loose tolerances.

Audi Junkie,
Please take some pictures of your stash

I didn't, and I blame this site! I have about 35 gallons of the **** now!

Oil makes me horny.

At night before bed, I go down to the basement to pay homage to the Great Wall of Oil. It tells me to procreate.

actually, I use my entertainment coupons, I get two extra large cheese pizzas for $15. I don't really throw anything away, but then again, I'm not a shopper.

I'd love to, but it's all spread around since the move.

Basicly:

30G Delo 30
20q Green GC
12q M1 0w-30 SL
50-60q PP
15q SynPower
12q Formula Shell
12q PZ SUV Blend
12q Q-TP
5q Havoline Synth-going in next.
6q Havoline Semi SL
50q Havoline DS 5w-20
1G RP 15w-40
2G Rotella

I know I forgot some, but that's about it.

I'll still buy the right oil at the right proce.

10W-40 runs kind of low pressure in that paricular air-cooled engine...Like 22 psi at 3800 RPM in the summer heat. I like to see about 10 PSI per 1000 RPM. I wouldn't normally use that stiff of oil in a water cooled engine.

I usually buy oil when the price is so good I can't resist. There haven't been too many of those deals lately, but the FAR Pep Boys Peak sale is what I like to see. Walmart also had some decent clearance deals in the past month or two.

I just counted my stash and was quite surprised to find over 200 quarts total! It really doesn't look like that much, honestly.

200 quarts may sound crazy to some, but I have 5 cars, 3 motorcycles, various pieces of power equipment and perform gratis oil changes for various family members and friends. I even stock filters for cars I don't own. If I can do an oil and filter change for $5 or less I'm satisfied.

I know guys who drop hundreds of dollars (or more) at casinos or strip clubs, so a couple hundred bucks invested in oil that I will eventually need anyway seems pretty harmless.

I buy oils I know I will be happy to use when I am able to get killer deals on them. A year or two ago there were all kinds of crazy coupon and rebate deals which let me build up a stash of Pennzoil Platinum and Valvoline Synpower at under $1/quart. Previously I had stocked up on Havoline Synthetic at $.33/quart when Autozones were clearing it out.

I've been slowly working my way through that inventory these past 12 months or so as motor oil prices skyrocketed.

For me it is a matter of buying stuff I know I will use when I can snag it cheaply. I don't aim to have any particular amount of oil in inventory. My latest purchase was some free after rebate Peak brand oil at PepBoys. I will probably use that to service one of my friends' cars, which I do from time to time.

BITOG didn't get me started on this, but the sales forum has sure helped me find the deals more easily.

So if the prices go thru the roof later, I have plenty and wont need to buy any. I have enough oil and filters for my truck to last it thru at least 25 oil changes.

Or maybe if you'd take the time to think about why most of us actually do UOA, you'd understand why we do them. Listen carefully: I have little or no interest in extending OCIs, and that's NOT why I do UOA. I do them to gauge both the condition of my engine, and how well the oils I use are working for me.

Change your oil whenever you want, and use whatever oil floats your boat. You'll always be guessing about what might work best for you. I know.

Back OT, I have a stash for two specific reasons. I wanted as much green GC as I could get my hands on -- and I succeeded in that endeavor. . .

Second, I have several jugs of PP 5w-20 for the Avalon. Got 'em on sale at WM a while back.

I still have three cases of PP 0w-20 ordered from the Oil Store (four cases in one order), for the TCH, ordered four strictly for convenience. Just try to find PP 0w-20 anywhere on the shelves. . .

It's probably much worse than that. Most people are getting multiple UOA's per 100K miles, and some get a UOA for every (or nearly every) oil change.

I also feel that unless you think you may have issues, many UOA's doesn't do any good. I've never done a UOA and won't unless I feel it could do some good.

Same department as insurance. You wouldn't go without car insurance, would you? So, if a UOA or two per year detects the onset of an engine killing coolant leak, UOA has paid for itself forever. Very discouraging to see how narrowly some view the value of UOA. I don't run an OTR truck company, so extending OCI is not a concern for me. I like KNOWING I'm not driving a time-bomb.

I always had some, buying when on sale. It's just that now I'm much more aware of ALL the sales. :-)

As someone who's FIRST post here was a UOA (my FIRST one) that showed Coolant in a engine that is known to be one of the toughest engines out there SHOWS how VALUABLE UOA are.

That USELESS UOA got my real tough engine repaired BEFORE REAL damage happened (AND got the MFG to pay for the REPAIRS OUT OF WARRANTY)

Yeah, UOAs are useless....

It is amazing to see all the experts

poo poo UOAs... In AirCraft and OTD/Commerical apps they are VERY important.

Of course, once there is a excellent UOA for the people who poo poo UOAs then UOAs are the best thing....

Its easy to believe in stuff... Marketing works wonders

Could not have said it better!

I believe in UOA's but I also believe in real world performance over time as a true test. UOA's are great for seeing TBN's, TAN's and possibly an iminent failure but serve little other purpose and trying to determine how well your engine is wearing is very difficult by way of UOA IMO.

So in general a UOA is useful for the following IMO:

-Monitor levels of regular wear metals to see a sudden spike which might sugguest that your engine has developed a problem.

-Over used motor oil that is too dirty for continued use (Insolubles)

-Over used motor oil that is going to turn accidic and start premature wear in your engine. (TAN)

-Additive package in motor oil is used up (TBN)

-Coolant leak into the engine oil.

-Fuel dilution due to mechanical problems.

-Determining how well a certain oil holds up in your engine with your driving patterns over a certain period of time.
