Motor Oil for 2024 Subaru BRZ

I recently brought home a brand new 2024 Subaru BRZ , it replaces my Honda S2000 which I sold a few years ago. I've been longing for something similar ever since I sold my car. The BRZ struck me as modern updated version of the S2000 with a fixed roof (I never liked convertibles) with more interior room, tech, safety, and reduced noise. It is currently sitting in my garage as it won't be used in winter.

I was keen on going with TGMO 0w-20 oil changes as the high moly count was something I wanted , but they seem to have recently cut down the moly in their formula. I think my next choice is sticking with Idemitsu and/or the Subaru dealer oil -which seems to be made by Idemitsu. The car will mainly be a weekend use only vehicle in warm weather months (Canada) , not to be tracked in any way, probably low miles to be put on it as I have a daily driver.

I have a supply of Mobil1 0w-20 extended performance which I have not used, and is left over in my current oil stash. I always thought it was a great oil, but I can use it on my Ford Escape if needed.

Any suggestions on what oil to run between Idemitsu or Mobil1 EP , I'd still consider TGMO too. I'd probably do one oil change a year given the low mileage use, just before winter storage (as I did with the S2000). I will do some oil changes myself but some at the dealer as well to keep them on my good side warranty wise (as I do have an extended warranty).

The transmission fluid spec is 75w GL4, so I need to search up some decent transmission fluid options but that won't be needed for a couple years, along with the differential fluid.

Thanks for reading and any suggestions.

Definitely go with the M1 EP, it’s a great oil and since you already have some, it’s free. And with all the sales that happen at Canadian Tire, it will cost less than the other choices in the future. It’s also on sale at the moment there (and if you have Triangle points you get $5 back in CT money for spending over $50)

Thank you Patman, yes that oil often comes up on sale , that is how I got a few bottles of it, and I do have a points card from Canadian Tire. Thanks for the points tip I will check it out and maybe stock up a bit more. Thank you.

M1 EP. The TGMO hasn’t showed high moly for a while now, formula changed.
Thank you, yeah it has been a bit of time since I came across a TGMO oil analysis , but I did see that the moly count dropped. I'm sure it is a good oil still but I really liked the moly count given the 20 weight. M1 EP is easy and cheap to find in my area so definitely worth using. I don't want to flip flop between oils so I'd like to pick one and stick with it.

The manual states that a 30 weight oil can be used if necessary, I think I am okay with the 20 weight as oil flow is important as is fuel economy. These aren't the most economical motors out there in terms of fuel economy. I am glad that they incorporated a dual fuel injection system on this motor to reduce fuel related issues down the road.

If you are going to "wring her out" a lot, I'd suggest an Xw-30 in it. Does it have a 6000 mile OCI specified like many of the other Subaru engines in that year?

I run good quality 0w20 oil in a 2024 Forester and change it every 5000 miles since it's so easy to remember, and I'm sure this is sufficient when good oil is used in non-severe service.

I am not sure you will notice any mpg change in real life, but your fragile rod bearings in that engine might appreciate thicker oil.

Thank you. Given the amount of driving I do a 0w-30 wouldn't be horrible in terms of fuel cost, but then again the cost of
our Premium high octane fuel here is very close to highway robbery lol.

I kind of like 10,000 km intervals which is right around 6k miles , as long as I am using a high quality oil. This year I may be changing it right before winter storage as I won't have too many miles on it more than likely.

I likely will not be wringing her out too much, when I had my S2000 with the 9000 rpm motor I didn't take it up that high very often in the 9 years I owned it. I see my cars as blank cheques, use the rpms when you need it, I'm getting older as well so my track days and auto-x days are well behind me. No need to test the oil pressure loss issue on hard track cornering either, I trust the cars but not that much. :) , plus people are still finding RTV in the oil pick ups on new cars despite having a couple years to have figured it out.

I put Ravenol DFE 0w-20 in my 2024 Outback Wilderness. It is the first "new" car I have purchased in quite a while, and I still can't get over the manufacturers now specifying 0w-20 oils in turbo engines. 🤷‍♂️ I’d prefer a 30 weight, but will stick to the 0w-20 as long as it is in the warranty phase.

When I did a search earlier I seen Ravenol come up quite a bit for tranny and diff fluid, and oil, it is not a brand I've heard of before. I feel better about the BRZ motor being naturally aspirated , I had two turbo WRX's before this and they seemed okay on 20 weight.

I ordered a 2025 BRZ and will do a UOA on the factory fill oil.

Here in Florida I can enjoy the car year round with our sunny weather.
Thank you for the UOA on the factory fill. A family member ordered a 25 BRZ Limited (white) manual a few weeks ago. A day after the order went in, SOA sent a VON via email. We are waiting for the VIN and a timeframe. I'm going to be using the Valvoline Advanced 0w20 at the first change around 1000 miles and send in a UOA (Oil Analyzers) as well.

Ravenol is venturing into the enthusiast side of things. So, you will probably encounter it more as you research.
Turbo or no, the engine is fairly fragile if used as intended, meaning \hardcore driving and track. Forget mpg. You bought vehicle that is advertised for track use, not Prius. In that engine I would use Euro stuff that has elevated ZDDP. Anything MB229.5 approval, common suspect being Mobil1 0W40 available in Wal mart. You really want good pressure in it if you are pushing that vehicle, especially through corners, as it is known for oil starvation during hard cornering.

Scan Gauge to monitor oil pressure easily??
