With the recent price increases is anyone extending their drain intervals compared to what they normally have done in the past?

In addition to the above question, what is the best oil deal out there right now. Cheapest I see at Walmart is the Supertech 5qt. jub for $10.50

I used to change my oil at 3000 miles, but dont do that anymore since joining this site

I now run my oil to at least 5000 miles before changing it out

the mc synblend is 11.24...or mobil clean $11...i cant believe gtx is 16$ now at WM...i think most people go at least 6k now...if i was living in AZ i would use synthetic because of the heat...i know a lot of people who dont give a s--- about changing their oil and people like bitgoers who live for it...i bet oil will come down looking at the way crude is sliding

I've been extending my OCI's out to 6 months/aprox 3000 miles since discovering BITOG. Now that the kids are gone, we arn't on the road as much as we once were with school events, travel sports and family vacations. We were on a 20,000 mile per year(at least on one of the vehicles) trend for some time but now, nothing to speak of. I used to change the oil between 3-4 months/3000-5000 miles. We were always on the go. In about 5-6 years we will cut down to 1 vehicle.

I usually buy my oil(dino & syn) on sale w/MIR(mail in rebate) or on closeout. I always get popular brands held in high regard here at Bob's. CHEAP!

I should have stated that our 6mo/3000mi OCI's are now on some newer vehicles since my old 3-4mo/5000mi OCI. Those older OCI's were on some older vehicles that we put some 250,000-350,000 miles, with many drivers in the family as the kids were learning their driving skills too. Now it's just my wife an I(both of us still working but, thinking about retiring) 5-6 years.

I've pretty much joined the 6 month OCI, and on 1 Van 12 month OCI club since joining BITOG. Seems our driving habits are now allowing for that. It sure beats every 3,000 miles.

One year or up to 7K miles (usually works out to about 6K) on a Honda Accord V6 using a Castrol GTX/Syntec mix and 1 year or up to 7K miles on a Ford F-150 5.4L V8 (oil TBD- currently on RP SL 5W20 as a test). The old timer, an '86 F-250HD diesel, is on a one year cycle but 6K miles on Rotella-T 15w40.I have yet to reach the mileage limit on anything since I started these cycles six years ago and usually change on time alone. I have two tractors on two year and up to 120 hour intervals on Rotella-T. The Honda and '86 F-250 intervals have been verified by UOAs. The F-150 is new to the farm and will be verified. The Tractors have just gone to the 2-year cycle from one year, which was verified by UOA. I'll UOA again in the fall of '09 to verify them.

I was old school and did 3,000 mile OCI's for many years. Now 6 month and 1 year intervals seem to work perfectly. They save me time and money. Another great feature of the time only OCI's is I do the oil changes while the weather is still cooperating.

GTX and GTX high mileage is on sale at 26 bucks for two 5 quart jugs right now at Wal Mart. Saw it last night, but that isn't a good deal either as Pennz YB is still at 12 bucks for 5 quart jug.

Most folks now are on a 5K OCI or every 6 months. Motor oil has really gone up in the last 6 months. Some companies attribute this to the in-direct connection to crude. The prices were going up monthly during this time the crude went towards 150.00 a barrel. Now it's down to 87.00 and possibly going lower....think motor oil will go down?

NOT!

It's like getting a raise, would you like to give back a few dollars an hour after you have been living on the greater scale of pay?

Good news is....we can extend our OCI out safely and make up for the CRAZY prices of motor oil now-a-day's.

Naw, I started changing my old school ways before the price started to increase. 8-9000 on one vehicle every six months on the other.

How do you guys consider changing your oil every 5,000 miles to be an extended drain?

Gotta run it 15k, cmon, DO IT!

I just did my first 6-month interval, 5500 miles. (Normally I do about 4800 mi. in that time, but this August I bugged out to Alabama for Gustav.) The GM OLM was reporting I still had 33% oil life left.

PP 5w30 is in the crankcase until April 10 or thereabouts. I may go back to conventional, or a syn-blend. My local AutoZone has 5 qts. of Valvoline Durablend and a Fram Tough Guard filter combo on sale for $17.99. That sort of sale, plus the $10 my regular mechanic charges to change my oil if I bring the supplies, would keep my oil changes under $30, less than $60 for a year.

If I go ahead and buy jackstands, I could do it myself (though I might be risking some neck strain), and then I could go with Formula Shell from Target at $2.29/qt. and a $4 filter. That would get me to $30 for the whole year.

Understand, I made these same kinds of calculations when the economy was (apparently) in great shape, not just now when everything is so shaky. I've always watched gas mileage and maintenance costs.

I found that I can't go more than 10 or 11 on the v6 accord with Amsoil. Elevated fuel. Wear numbers a good, just the oil takes a beating. Not willing the explore the fuel issue too much. That mileage takes me about 6 months anyway and I am ok with that.
As an experiment, I am running Penz YB 5w20 for 5000 miles to see how that looks.

I'm too scared, just can't make myself go that extra mile.

I've always done the factory recommended 7500 mile OCI in my Mazda Protege5. 130k miles later it still runs great. about 120k of that was Mobil1 but I'm using Amsoil now and switching to a 6mo (about 10k miles) OCI just for fun.
My 4.6l F-150 also going gets the same regimen with amsoil.

well my last oil changed I switched to Amsoil 30w SSO. At first i was all hyped up about going to the one year mark. Now that my maintenance minder is down to 20%/6k of use. I have the urge to drain the oil and change it. Been resisting for the past two weeks.lol I'm sure Amsoil lasts alot longer then 6k, just me being a wuss i guess. I'm gonna try to push it to 10k, pull a sample and send it to blackstone.

Sounds like me

I could run the ASL Amsoil I've got in the Explorer longer then 5000 miles, but it's already been in the Explorer now for the last year(last October 2007) so I'm gonna be changing it out for some new ASL here in a week
