I would like to hear from someone who has personally had a problem with a FRAM filter, not heard of someone who did, etc. I have used these filters since I was in my 20s, and I'm 60 now. I have used others, but I've used more FRAM than anything else. I have never had a problem to my knowledge with FRAM. I generally drive a car till it has a lot of miles on it, 150K or more, and I use FRAM and Havoline, never had an internal engine problem such as seizing up, or bearing failure, etc.

If you don't cut filters open and look inside, you may never know if there was a problem or not. Only time you'll know if there was a problem without cutting one open is if it leaks oil, or if there's a catastrophic failure that makes it evident something went majorly wrong with the filter. I haven't used FRAM for years, and never cut them open then ... but I do cut all my filters open now. I am however going to run a FRAM Ultra on my Altima, probably for 2 x 5K OCIs.

Same here. Only filter that ever did that on that particular car.

Which FRAM filter was it?

10 4 on that, plus I have used many brands of oil filters thru 40 years of driving and no engine failures due to an oil filter, so I really do not know the big deal over them, but thats me.

My Dad used orange can Frams almost exclusively on the 1978 Plymouth van we had from when he bought it brand new until he sold it in 2005ish. 360 V8 still running strong with over 350k miles on it.

They cut a set of keys to it for me when I turned 16 and I was tasked with maintenance. It got a steady diet of Castrol GTX 20W50 per his insistence as well.

I don't think Frams are bad per se, I just think they're a very low value for money oil filter.

I had a FRAM that caused tapping, at startup on a VW 1.8T. I swapped it out with a Purolator, same oil, and the tapping was gone. The bad FRAM was one of their "upscale" models, "Tough Guard" or somesuch...

I had a problem with one on the car I still have 68' Rambler American, and it was with a non black [censored] grip FRAM, had horrible start up rattle. Switched to WIX made PRO TEC filter, problem solved.

Remember, the oil is far more important than the filter. Using the OCOD like you have proves my point. However, compared to other filters like MC, Puro classic, and Bosch, the OCOD is visably inferior so I would not use one.

Me. Both a personal failure that caused massive engine damage and saw some when I worked parts and we sold Fram.

I have had Tapping and oil warning light slow to turn off on more than one Orange can. Never had that with other filters.

Still use them occasionally, if the price is right.

I used to use Frams most of the time but had not used one for many years.I got one of the oil and filter deals and the filter was a Microgard that was made by Fram.

It seemed to do good at first but a short time into the 'run',I started getting bad engine knock/rattle.

I changed the filter to a Purolator and so far,no knocking/rattle.

Especially its high cost. If it costs 1/2 the price of Purolator Classic I may use it for short OCI.

My 86 Capri would tap loudly at startup with the PH8A. After using Napa, Purolator, and Motorcraft, I've never had an issue and will never use that orange garbage again.

Everything I used a Fram on, Regardless of oil brand or viscosity,
Always a rattle on start-up. Roughly 20% of the time, particularly on DOHC or high valve count, a top end noise.

In any case, any other filter cured the problem, instantly.
