Hmm...

Not so. This thread is currently 3 pages long, and the other has reached 4 pages, and the other filter is being called WCOD.

I could care less what you use, my point is simply they are not as bad as they are made out to be. The "Chicken Little" type posts that are so common are just silly, that's all.

I have run fleet trucks for YEARS on OCOD's with nary a problem. I'm talking a lot of filters, never an issue.

There are much better out there for the same or less, but the whole Fram thing is another Internet Sensation.

I've never used a Fram filter in the past (that I'm aware of), but since I found this forum last year and read so much opposition to it, I decided to buy one today, fit it this weekend, and see what the fuss is all about. I'll bet my experience will be uneventful.

No need to be snippy. My comment above was not directed at you, it was based on my experience with their fuel filters rusting out prematurely and leaking gas.

If you read my entire post, you'll see that I said FRAM oil filters are not "bad" per se, just that they are not a good value for money.

Not trying to be "snippy" at all. Sometimes the written word doesn't come across as intended. No offense meant.

If you've had a bad experience with something by all means you'd be foolish to use it, I wouldn't use it either.

And I agree with you, many Frams are low in the value factor. The "internet sensation" hysteria just mentioned is my main beef.

People need to save that for the e-core filters. Now there's a filter that deserves it!

For me the biggest issue with modern day Fram oil filters( ignoring my past bad experiences with them )is the simple fact they cost as much as or even more than other filters that I know for a fact are built better. I can buy OEM filters( AC, MTC, MOPAR, etc... ), or known quality aftermarket brands, for less than a Fram OCOD or worse case the same cost. It just makes no sense to buy a Fram OCOD to me????

Now, when it comes to the Fram Ultra's so many are high on I freely admit my past bad experience is what keeps me away from them. I just won't even try them or give them a chance. I just do not trust Fram to make a good oil filter. I will use their air filters, cabin air filters, PCV's, etc... but I will never run a Fram oil filter again.

That doesn't mean Fram oil filters, be they OCOD's or Ultra's, won't work. I just don't understand why anyone would buy the OCOD when there are so many better options for the same or less $$$. I can't see paying top dollar for a premium filter from a company with a known reputation for producing such lousy products either.

To each his own however.

I agree.

This Youtube video shows the quality different between Mahle and OCOD and another. If the price of Mahle filter is about the same as OCOD then I don't see any reason to buy OCOD.

I used Frams until I started cutting them. Never again.

I was redoing the format on my site the other day and it surprised me that the majority of the problem filters I've posted over time are Frams.

From gaps in paper, gaps at the center tube, weak springs, and hard rubber valves, it isn't worth it.

Here's my real world experience with Fram filters.

Been using Fram filters on all my vehicles for the last 23 years. Never had an issue with the Fram until a couple of years ago. It was on my Suzuki sport bike and the filter was the PH6017a. For all my vehicles (Car or Motorcycle) they have always seen 5000 Km (3000 mile) oil changes religiously! Whether I am running conventional or Synthetic. I decided to try the PH6017a a couple of years ago because the filter cost half the price of the oem Suzuki filter. First oil change went as usual, on the second oil change a new filter I changed the oil at 4500 km and found that the PH6017a ballooned!!!!

I wish I had kept the filter and cut it open but in my anger and disgust I just chucked it in the recycling. I switched back to the oem and ran the bike at least 5 more changes before I sold it without and issue.

Up here in Canada, almost every convenient shop that carries oil filters have Fram's wall to wall. Wal mart, Canadian tire, Part Source and so on. Until recently. Walmart has done away with Fram's and it's now Wall to wall with Purolator and Bosch! I'd love to find out the reasoning behind this, but I'm guessing it's money savings issue for Walmart.

Both my vehicles at the moment are running Fram's strictly for comparison testing between other filters. Then I will decide if I will continue with Fram filters or jump ship like many others have.

One thing I do know, is none of my motorcycle's will see a Fram Filter again. In a car, filter related issue could leave you at the side of the road with a hefty repair bill. On a motorcycle, it could be deadly.

I use a PH-25 on my '62 Buick most of the time, no troubles yet. The same filter on my '77 Riviera can be tappy at times. Angle of mount is around 60 deg on that one.

Only problem I have ever had with Frams was a few sticky gaskets coming off on the block when the filter was removed. However, I have had AMSOIL oil filters (two of them) blow their base gaskets off, one side of the gasket blowing out between the filter and the block on my 2007 Ninja 650r when started in freezing temperatures. Before anyone blasts me for knocking Amsoil, the holy grail of the BITOG world, the filters were torqued to spec and the oil was the correct grade.

Hemi,
As many on this forum know, I am the tech manager at FRAM. Please tell us exactly what the filter failure was, did you file a claim with FRAM, what was the outcome when you filed the claim? Please do not insult the forum by saying the filter "caused a massive engine failure" and no claim was filed. Nobody eats an engine becuase of a part failure. We build 200 million filters per year, including many brands that held in high regard on this forum. If by chance we do make a filter that caused an engine failure, you can bet we stand behind our product 110%. We get letters every single day from hardcore FRAM users with 300, 400 and recently just filmed a guy turning over 500,000 miles on a 2002 GMC Sonoma. We are sponsoring a lab visit this spring, have room for a couple more BITOG guys who really want to learn about filtration. Contact me at [email protected]. Want to see a truck turn over 500k using FRAM? Look up scott lipford on youtube. Unscripted, real, and still running strong daily driver.

Motorking, I think it's nice that you occasionally post here. But occasionally somebody on here will post a link to a filter failure where there is a lawsuit again Fram or your parent company and Fram vigorously fights it. Why is it that your posts are nowhere to be seen when that happens? BTW, I'm not a Fram basher just to be a Fram basher. I am running a couple of MicroGard filters (relabeled Frams) on a couple of my vehicles now, so don't accuse me of bashing Fram just because I'm jumping on the band wagon.
So..in the future..whenever there is a Fram filter failure posting on this site connected to a lawsuit, or simply an obvious Fram failure where pictures were included, can I PM or email you so that you may comment on it?

I was wondering when you would chime in. Please do not insult me by insuating I am lying when you know nothing about this situation. NOTHING!

The filter failed on a car that was already 10 years old. The filter FAILED and the result was a blown engine. I did not file a claim with Fram at the time. I didn't think the hassle was worth it as the car wasn't new(er). Before you try and say it was the engine and not the filter let me assure you that is WRONG! The car wasn't much but the engine ran great. OP was excellent, good pressure in all cylinders, no sludge or other previous conditions, etc... It was the failed up filter, which lead to lubrication issues, that caused it. PERIOD!

I just bit the bullet and dealt with it vs trying to mess with your company( actually years ago so different ownership group anyway ). No idea if the failures I saw with Fram oil filters back when I worked in the field and sold them ever resulted in a claim being filed or not as they weren't my vehicle nor was I the mechanic? I saw burst cans, failed welds, collapsed media, etc...

You do your company no favors by going after people who talk of problems and accuse them of lying especially when your product is known for failures. Despite my dislike of your oil fiilters I have no issue with your other products as mentioned. I try and always be fair and mention that. Your attitude and internet attack however may change that too.

EDIT - I can't remember the part # but the current filter by application would be a PH30 I believe.

The danger of blown-out media is what it can plug up downstream-such as piston underside oil squirter nozzles, oil galleries (especially to turbos & VVT-i/VCT units). IMO, the danger presented by the E-core plastic cage is much greater than the standard Fram Extra Guard/"OCOD" design-and unfortunately filters are appearing (Fram TLE, larger Valucrafts & Microguards) that have the worst of both worlds now that Fram & Champ have combined.

So even when you see 1st hand a FRam that fails and even have one damage your engine you suffer from FDS? Maybe FDS should actually stand for Fram Defender Syndrome and you sir have it.
