most PCMO's are using similar additive packages. I wonder if they are the same? If only a few make the additives and base oils as we all know, what really differentiates some of these oils? Ever notice how similar many of the additive packages are? Most use around the same about of Moly/boron with some using different rations of each.

MC - 250 ppm of Boron / 50ppm of Moly
Amsoil - 250ppm of Boron / 50ppm of Moly
M1 SL "same"

PP and Syntec look similar.

I guess to some extent, oil is oil...

Obviously oils are different to some extent (base oil % etc.), but it looks like many of the oils share the same add packs.

There is a whole bunch of ashless additives. The additive suppliers sell many different packages. Go to their sites and check them out. Some oil companies have their own additive companies so they have a lot of independence. If you only focus on moly and boron, then you have a point, but they are a drop in the bucket compared to the whole package.

When add-packs show such similarities, then most look at the base oil specs for each. Yet there are some here that prefer Group III over Group IV and V.

It's all in ... Whatever Floats Your Boat!!!

JAG, your right. I've just always wondered how many of these oil companies purchase the same/similar additive package from the handful of additive suppliers that are out there. They are definitely different but I bet they are more similar then they are different which is why results from most oils look the same. It's also why B/S labs doesn't see a difference in brand or with conv. vs synthetic. Just a thought.

Most of the additive packages oil companies use comes from the same few additive companies . S M rated oil additive packages or S J additive packages etc.
